Surviving Slat Grills

Post by tizzard » Thu Aug 18, 2022 7:04 am

Out of (idle) interest does anyone know or estimated how many Slat Grills still survive?

Hello,
Not sure about Slat's in the US, but i try to attend a few shows/events in my Slat [111241] here in the UK and have only seen one other being used.
It was very tired and much original parts lost...but it was being driven and used, which was great.
Where are the UK Slats?

Mine is 101109 and I think there are about 40-50 ahead of mine still around. My guess is a couple hundred still survive. Many of these were not used in combat and sent to training bases so they had a bigger chance of surviving.

Tony Sudds has a beautiful Canadian Contract Slat.

Steve Rivers, at Dallas Auto, has a complete Canadian Contract Slat frame (no body) that was turned into a training aid. It is very cool.

I know there are several Slats in the UK but they are not as prevalent as they are in the US.

Cheers,
Peter

It seems that the small range of 25,500 slats has a higher survival rate than any other range of 25,000 wartime jeeps.

I assume that is due to their rarity that more get restored/saved as opposed to getting parted out/scrapped.

2nd due to limited amount of slat grills leaving the states.

124 in Europe (24 in The Netherlands, 15 in the Scandinavian countries and Iceland, 12 in Belgium/Luxembourg, 8 in Great Britain etc ...)

Nice to hear from all you Slat enthusiats....
The Slat training aid, now belonging to Dallas Autos was brought from myself....i was lucky enough to purchase it from Kevin Wheatcroft [he owns the Donnington Military Collection]
I am glad Dallas have it, they got it running and it makes a fantastic display in their showroom.
I hope to see some of those Slats out and being used in the UK.........

Just thought i would weigh in. My Slat 117644 is still running and in good condition. I believe my engine MB-118787 and body 19383 are all together from the beginning.

My slat 103768 is running well (on a GPA engine) and Ive done a lot of work on it over my ownership. A bit rough and well used - just like they should be !
