Wanted - Early petrol Tank (UK)

Post by tizzard » Wed Aug 10, 2022 5:15 am

Hi

Having now attempted to fit three reproduction early/slat grill petrol tanks I have decided the best option is find (if possible) an original tank in good/restorable condition. If you know of one please let me know!

Thanks

Not to hijack the topic but I would like to hear what your issues with repro small mouth tanks were, as I was thinking of getting the JMP one when back in stock?

JMP have been very helpful over the issue of the reproduction Slat Grille fuel tank. My first tank was difficult to fit, very tight - it took real ingenuity to fit. After a short time (2 months of use) it became apparent it was faulty and leaking, removing a large area of new paintwork underneath and in the well. JMP exchanged without a problem, for which I thank them and in fairness have always found them very considerate and helpful. The new repro was more difficult to fit than the first requiring some slight, but reversible modification to the fuel tank well to enable fitting. I am a very experienced Jeep owner and it took me around four hours to convince the Jeep it should accept the tank.

Thanks, so it seems their measurements weren't 100% yet? Do you have the original sump?

My vehicle is luckily 100% original with no replacement panels nor filler so yup it has its original sump

That must be nice  The body on mine is mostly original but did require some new patches on the floor and it lost the sump. We replaced it then (25 years ago) with a standard sump, which was the only one available then but looking into a JMP square sump now too, which I guess will have no problem accepting their tank

Did you find an early gas tank? If not I have an early small mouth petrol tank with 3 penny size rust holes in the bottom middle. there has also been a CJ2a style filler tube brazed or soldered to the upper edge of the tank.

I am shipping a 2 complete jeeps to Germany (from California) so postage for the tank would be from Bensheim Germany.

I fitted one from Universal in the summer. Its incredible quality very thick stell with detailing spot on. I buy stuff from JMP but believe their tanks arent as robust. I think the box said it was a Seal Tested one.
