Slat Grill battery tray
Hi all, I have the original frame of the battery tray, but I'm going to have to make the two trays myself with the help of Jon's drawing. However, I have 2 questions:
a) How are the trays welded to the frame?
b) Do all original trays have the 2 holes in them?
Any pointers would be welcome!

Hi David,
Good to hear there is another slattie close to where I live. I do live up North .
My slat grill still has the original battery tray mounted. Will have a look tonight and fire some pics over, Ok?
Cheers,
Jos

Can confirm that both of my slat battery trays where spot welded 4 times per tray half so 8 spot welds total.
Both also have 2 holes per tray which line up with the mount underneath. So 4 holes total.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know! Are they spot welded at the underside to the edge of the frame, or did the trays have 4 smaller holes each that were filled with the spot weld?BERLIN RED wrote: ↑Mon Dec 06, 2021 5:53 amCan confirm that both of my slat battery trays where spot welded 4 times per tray half so 8 spot welds total.

We have this one for about 25 years now, and I'm planning a light refurbishment which is a good chance to correct some errors I didn't do before... pics are certainly welcome, thanks!

Re: Slat Grill battery tray
It would be wonderful if you could post the photographs on this group. I am going to be fixing my battery tray as well, and would love to see the details. Thanks!

Slat Grill battery tray
Pics from the battery tray. I think it is still the original tray, since it was very rusty and had some repairs when I did a restoration.
Can confirm it has 2 holes on each side. Don’t see the spot welds but it is definately spotwelded.
Cheers,
Jos

Thanks, after studying those photos I don't see a trace of spot welds on the top which means they were most likely welded from the underside.

Re: Slat Grill battery tray
Thanks Hal! In the end I'll just work with the possibilities I have, I've never heard of anyone removing a battery to check if the tray is welded in the correct place But as long as they're not welded in I can make adjustments according to what others may find on their trays.
Just yesterday I found some scrap metal of the correct gauge on a friend's scrap heap (an old truck fender), but first I want to build a small vice-held sheet metal brake to make clean folds. I got some nice angle iron from the same scrap pile.
Btw, we have MB II0247, d.o.d Jan 8, 1942 so I guess 1 day after yours.

Re: Slat Grill battery tray
David,
Have checked the underside of the tray. No signs of welding at all. So safe to assume the sheet metal is spot welded to the base of the tray.
Cheers,
Jos
