This engine is in a newly acquired willys mb, but it’s a 1945. Based on the engine number that seems way off.

This Jeep has been sitting since the 80s and was acquired by the original owner just after ww2. So why would it have a slat grill engine in it.

Hello,
The jeep data plate is screwed on the glove box cover, not riveted as it should be.
Nobody can be sure that it was attached to the jeep since it’s delivery to the US Army.

I’m currently digitizing many jeep data from the Australian Army ledgers.
The Aussie jeep’s were registered by their engine number, so that the engine swaps were closely traced.
It clearly shows that the engines were changed many times ( up to four times) during WWII and the years immediately after.
So it’s really not unusual to have an early MB engine in a late MB.

MB's had data plates screwed on, however the big spacers are there probably since the edges of tag broke off.

Engine serial number well, if its too good to be true, it may be fake, that engine is the 300th engine for the mb, very early, the stamp on the block for the 1 does not look right, the 0's do not look correct, what is the casting date on the engine? any other info down there by the casting number. picture of area above water pump. the block itself, what little is shown, does not seem to have correct casting characteristics.

glove box tag another issue, do you have a further back picture, it looks correct for a 45, not mounted on correct material, any info on the frame tag if it is there?

I talked to the original owners again last night the jeep has been in their family since the end of ww2 and they don’t recall ever taking the motor out or rebuilding it. I’ll take more pictures today and look for frame tag and other numbers.

I’ll have to do some clean up on the frame tag. It’s been painted over a couple of times.

Engine number seems original.

The engraved numbers are so deep and font is the correct one.

To verify if the "1" is a number or a "I".

Kindest Regards

Luigi

Frame tag matches tag on glove box.
