1942 BRT Slat Grill Jeep 121229 Recovered
Hello,
Hopefully this will entertain the Slat section a little
I recently bought this Slat Grill jeep from another G member, that had earlier posted this project being available, here on the G503, and just like that, it is now in Florida
Serial number : 121229
Dated 3-6-42
Stamped : BRT for Britain
The jeep stayed in the USA .
This post is just to show the jeep in its current state.
I have many jeeps to do before this one, but at least it has been saved from rusting away.
I do want to get it restored in the future, but it will be a few years down the line.
It also came with an Airborne dump trailer, an M100, and a rust free early CJ2a frame.
Since it was only about 1500 miles round trip away, well you know the story
It does however have a GPA engine, GPW radiator, and GPW transmission in it.
Fortunately I do have a late Slat engine that should fit its production date perfectly.
I also have a Geesink rear panel for a slat as well that I got many years ago back
in high school.
This jeep was made and stamped on the very last day of Slat Grill production !!
I was also Very Happy to see that this jeep was made for the British, having a BRT stamped on the data plate !!
To me that is a great historical marker for this jeep, and it has a current title as well
It is interesting as you can see changes incorporated in this slat body compared to earlier slat bodies, before the ACM type 1 body was standardized.
The engine will be rebuilt for use in my GPW , as well as the GPW transmission.
The frame has a major rust through issue on front driver's side frame rail.
I wanted to share this Jeep Rescue with the G, it was a big effort, and went very well.
This jeep will ride again, and be restored, but will be waiting a little while .
Here are some photos :
As found Loaded up and back in Florida Note the rounded gas tank well, not a squared off earlier slat type. Note the glove box and the keyed glove box lock Best Regards,
Ray

Hello,
Here are some additional pictures
I have never seen a jeep with this many miles on it, I can only imagine where she has traveled since WW2 !!!! I can't tell if it is a "gas" marked gauge or a "fuel" marked gauge ? Here you can just see the horizontal machining marks on the top bow bracket that was used on slat grill jeeps, added on this last day of slat production. Standard tool box lid hinges, on both sides.
Best Regards,
Ray

And yes,
A couple more pictures. I was told that this jeep had a pancake style air cleaner and that it was recently removed, along with the early radio suppression box under the dash, before I got it.
Here you can see the elbow used exclusively on the pancake air filter.
Note the vertical bolt that is going through it to attach to the elusive pancake air filter.
And a clear close up of the beautiful brass data plate for this BRT Lend Lease Jeep.
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: 1942 BRT Slat Grill Jeep 121229 Recovered
Hi,
Thanks Tate and Two Car !
She will be a rewarding project in the future.
She is also a significant find being a BRT Lend Lease Jeep meant for Great Britain, and delivered on what I understand was the very last day of Slat Grill Jeep production !
No more after this date, but BRT jeeps carried on, as well as the very rare Willys Script jeeps
with a flat top, stamped grill, made starting the very next day.
Both impressive in their low numbers, and beauty.
I am trying to do my part in saving our collective history from disappearing !!!
Keep 'em Rolling all around the world, and stay safe and sound, and keep Jeeping all over the world
Hopefully others with BRT or slat grill jeeps can gain some info to help their restorations !!
Feel free to add your jeep pictures or comments on what you have !!!
Best Regards,
Ray

Hello,
Another important feature that this last day Slat Grill Jeep has is a Black Sheller
steering wheel .
It has deteriorated, but here are the key pictures of the wheel and Sheller.
Here you can see the Sheller brand clearly, and it is black rubber.
I had to put a flag over the wheel, to block the sunlight to get the pic, thus the color
Best Regards,
Ray

It would take a lot of epoxy to fill that one

How can you prove it was made on the last day of slat production, That serial number falls way before end of slat grill production, maybe just held up due to being a brt unit that gives it a late dod?

Re: 1942 BRT Slat Grill Jeep 121229 Recovered
Hello Adam,
Good question !
Based on what is meant by me is , this jeep is date stamped, and is a slat grill jeep, and it is known that this jeep date stamp was stamped on the last day of Slat Grill Jeep production.
I read that this date was the day the last "slat grill" was installed, and after that date, jeeps stamped with a later date on the data plate, would be a "stamped grill" type MB, even though the same bodies were still used for a while, until used up on the production line, and Willys was removed from the rear panel.
Clearly there are many higher serial number slat grill jeeps, but I would venture to guess that none have the date of delivery stamped later than this jeep does.
This is what I believe is the current knowledge that is available according to some G people, that know a whole lot more than I ever did.
It would be great to discover differently !!
The day of delivery on all jeeps, only represent the date that the inspector stamped them, and as far as I understand, not the day they were actually manufactured.
As far as proving the actual day of any jeep's physical production, well no one does that, they go by the date of delivery on the dash data plate.
Jeeps parked in huge parking lots after production, and inspectors then process them and stamp the data plates. I guess it depends on where the jeep gets parked as to the serial number assigned to it and when, and who, and how many people were assigned to apply the serial numbers, and what batches of numbers they were given to assign and stamp on the jeeps.
I am always open to learn new information and dates, but I would be interested in seeing actual slat grill jeeps dated after 3-6-42.
There will certainly be plenty Willys Script jeeps dated after this one, which were basically slat jeeps given a new grill on the assembly line, a rare jeep in itself.
Also BRT marked jeeps were continued well past this date !!!
According to what jeep researchers posted , this is what I understand to be the current "facts"
but they can certainly change and often do
Hopefully G members that have the knowledge about the last slat grill production date will
comment, and add what they know about the change over from Slat to stamped.
I am just going by what I have read over the years, posted by others
The body tub serial number on this jeep is 24884.
That could help triangulate the date of production based on other jeeps' date of deliveries, but that too would technically depend on when a serial number is actually issued to the jeep, along with date of delivery date stamps.
It would be great if other Slat owners from this date of delivery would post pictures of their jeeps and data plates here !!
I saw one online that is dated 4 days before this one, but a couple thousand higher in serial number.
We can just go by the date of delivery, and try to understand how many jeeps were made per day, how soon inspectors got to each jeep, and how many inspectors were used, and what batch of numbers they had to inspect.
Did the same inspector also stamp the frame and data plate serial numbers as they got to the jeep ???
Were inspectors given a list of assignable serial numbers and just assigned them when they did, regardless of the time the jeep came off the assembly line ?
All good questions
This is what the G is here for !!!
Best Regards,
Ray
