Navy Department data plate

Post by Themb6429 » Wed Jul 03, 2024 9:56 am

Hello everyone,
Having had a few small problems until now, I am slowly resuming the restoration of my "Mb Navy". I found a brass plate "Navy Department" that I would like to have engraved to try to get as close as possible to the original or at least to what was done at the time, so do some of you (for those who have navy) or those who are familiar with the subject on these versions, would they have photos for example?
Thank you in advance for your help

Willys did not have "Navy Department"please on their jeeps. The navy may have added a small registration tag.

There is no special factory data plate.

Cheers,
Peter

Here is a thread on the topic.

Hello Peter,
Thank you for your response, I looked at the discussion thread, if I understood correctly these brass plates (photo) did not exist during the conflict (?), there would not have been any either focuses on Willys (?) despite the fact that they can be found on some Jeeps.

Philippe,

I think you are confusing your details. Slat Grille's had brass data plates, but this is clearly for a CJ, it is stamped in the model block. The curious detail is that they have stamped 1953 as the year of manufacture but have stamped 12/52 as the shipping date.

My guess is this is for a CJ-V35U radio jeep.

Either way, it is not a WWII tag and the 94-##### is post-war. If you are representing this as a rebuild tag for your purposes that is your choice but it is not correct.

Bon Chance with your restoration and enjoy your jeep.

Peter

Peter,
I probably expressed myself badly, as we see everything on the Jeep, were there any during the conflict of the 2nd World War with this type of plate (the photo is of course that of a Cj taken on the internet ) at least for the few Navy that there were at that time?
Mine also being in Navy colors I would have liked to put a similar plate on it with its numbers, is this good or not??
Thanks 😊

Philippe,

No worries, your English is better than my French. There were no data plates like this on WW2 jeeps used by the Navy.

All contract jeeps made by Willys for the Navy and Marines were painted Forest Green.

In the end, no Navy from the WW2 conflict (even Gpw?) “officially” had this type of plate?
The fact of putting one (what I wanted to do) as I have seen on some here (in France) is nothing other than pure invention on the part of each Jeep owner  ?
Thanks again

Philippe,

You are correct on all counts, no MB or GPW had a plate like this in WWII. It is pure invention by the owner.

Peter is correct and to date I have yet to see a contract jeep marked NOM... but we have a few MB-NAVY contract radio jeeps marked as in this link.

Be aware that no other MB, other that a Navy Contract Radio Jeep was marked as such

Good job , Peter
