There were definitely Jeeps produced for export both with and without hood numbers. Just look at the AWM (Australian War Memorial) vehicle registration logbooks for evidence or even photos of Jeeps going to BRT, CHI, or RUS orders. Some have hood numbers. Some do not.

So it likely depends on the contract number, and when or how they were pulled out of the production lots.

There are quite a few good posts on this topic on the forum.

RDF,

I addressed this in my chapter on "Exporting the MB" when I did the MB books with Lloyd White 10 years ago. Since those books are out of print I am happy to help and restate the main information here.

There were 10,034 BRT contract jeeps that had USA registration numbers, the inclusive USA registration numbers were 2078697 to 2088730 and painted in blue drab on the hood but not on the rear panel. It is my belief that the rear panel was left blank on these jeeps so the WD census number could be applied there for record purposes. These USA numbers are in the May-June 1942 production range.

We don't know why these jeeps were assigned a USA number but it could very well be that the QMC reclaimed them for US needs as America ramped up for the war.

It appears most BRT MB's found in the US are dated around 25 March 1942.

Unlike the Canadian contract MB's, the BRT contract MB's were standard production and built to the same specs as the QMC US Army contracts. This means that regardless of the stamp on the data plate, any jeep could fill the BRT contract requirement and vice versa.

Most BRT contracts for new MB's did not have a USA registration number, they were assigned a WD census number which was painted in white on both sides of the hood as well as the rear panel. These were most likely shipped to the UK since they had a WD number assigned at the Willys factory.

BRT contracts continued throughout the war but the BRT stamp stopped in 1942 as specialized contracts were eliminated by the US government. The British received around 80,000 jeeps but after 1942 they were typically reconditioned MB's and GPW's transferred from US units in theatre as they received new jeeps. These jeeps were received in blocks to fulfill the British contracts and assigned WD census numbers to replace the USA numbers.

Hopefully this clears things up and helps with your efforts.

Cheers,
Peter

Thank you very much Peter for your answer 👍. Now it’s clear.
My jeep BRT128533 , 03/17/42 , normally didn’t have a USA registration number.

I wish you a good day.🤗

Hi Peter I believe my 42 MB to be of the BRT contract as her DOD was 31/03/42 and her hood number was 2084536-S ! Her chassis number is MB132051 on a short strap slat chassis!

Lloyd,

Thanks for sharing. You are in the range I provided, your DOD is what I have typically seen for BRT contract MB's.

The block of USA #'s I shared is correct but ignore my DOD reference window, for all I know they were assigned to March '42 BRT jeeps to absorb them into the US inventory.

Cheers,
Peter

Thankyou Peter I understood it was in the block of a snatch back Chinese Contract! But that would explain why it ended up over here in the colonies!
Appreciate your input
