September 9th 2014

Two figures were painted in PVA glue to bulk them up to represent fire proof suits. They were painted white with a silver vision panel in the helmet. One was given some copper wire to hold to represent the canvas fire hose.

Image

They were glued down along with the fire truck, but there would be further work to complete the scene.

Several vehicles are parked around the crash and would have rescue crews added.

Several officers on the tower look on towards the Lancaster.

At the hangar, the Station Hack C-47 transport plane is unloading some cargo, but appears to have had a problem with the port engine. Mechanics are already starting work to sort the problem.

Another GMC truck is waiting to take the C-47 cargo away.

Image

At the other end of the hangar, there are piles of crates. So much material and spares arrived in wooden crates, there were often piles of boxes seen around the tech site. These boxes were often recycled to make shelters around the dispersals, work benches or even just burned in the wood burning stoves in barracks. Cold was always a problem in the temporary accomodation on airfields.

Another view of the right end of the hangar showing the crates and Catalina Air Sea Rescue plane.

More crates are stacked up on the loading platform while another GMC 6x6 truck is parked near by, waiting to be loaded.

Looking across the hangar queen and other wrecked airframe sections, along the road to the loading platform.

Image

The next step for the fire crew was adding a curve of thin multi-strand wire to the end of the fire hose, bending towards the Lancaster engine and wing. The fire is out now, but with the heat from the fire and engine, plus what ever fuel is left, the fire crew isn't taking chances. Once the wire had glued firmly in place, a mix of gritty sand and PVA glue was used to simulate the foam from the hose. This was painted in and around the thin wire supports creating a nice arc of foam. Once dry, it would be painted white to blend in with the rest of the foam around the Lancaster.

At the end of the hangar with the Catalina, a GMC 6x6 is being loaded, while two ground crew walk by, one carring belts of .50 cal ammo.

Image

Along side the hangar, on one of the loop dispersals, a B-17 is being prepared by its ground crew.

The RAF crew make their way our of the rear exit of the Lancaster while US medical crews assist. While this is a US air base, the Lancaster crew must have found it to be the first safe place to land. With one prop feathered and another engine on fire, getting down quickly was the highest priority. The fire must have damaged the hydraulics as the port side landing gear collapsed on landing.

On the road up to the station, a small military convoy turns off to head over the bridge. Other trucks are heading up to, or down from the station.

Back in the Tech Site, some officers are milling around between the nissen huts. Four blast shelters can be seen oround the buildings.

Back to the guys loading or unloading the GMC. Close by, a man with a flag signals to the vehicle towing the Catalina that the wing tip is clear of the hangar door. There isn't much clearance for the 104 feet wing span aircraft.

Some time back in the project, the customer realised that the original plan became unaffordable due to changes in the Euro/Pound exchange rate. At that point, the tracks under the airfield were changed to swing 180 degrees to run down the back of the airfield and station. Turnouts were left to direct the tracks left off the board to allow future expansion.

Feb 4th 2015

A narrow board was built to attach to the rear of the airfield, carrying the run around tracks. These would run all the way down the back and make another 180 turn under the mine section, to be built to the right of the station section.

Image

One main line track split into two, with the new outer line slowly dropping in height to link up with the lower branchline.

Apr 24th 2015

My daughter came into the workshop to see what I was up to, and ended up "playing trains" along the lower branch line of the country station section, up into the tunnel under the airfield. We couldn't run much further, as the airfield section track was dirty, and with the left end of the layout resting on my work bench, I couldn't get underneath to clean it.

Image

It was nice to see a steamer with three coaches running down the bank to the level crossing.
