I know its the middle of winter, but modeling energy can only be held back for so long! Here I have for your amusement a Piper L4 Grasshopper in 'Giant Scale'.
She came as an RTF (Ready To Fly) kit, with all electronics installed, a radio and receiver, and minimal assembly required.
The actual L4 was 22' long and 6' tall.

This model is 41" long, (vs. 44" if in true 1/6th scale), and 11" tall (vs. 12" in true 1/6th) . . .making it 1/ 6.55 scale.
Close enough for future photoshoots!

Hmm, weather has finally lifted, I may be able to do some recon soon!

All this came for the staggering price of $199 plus shipping from California...and I can actually fly it if I ever get up the nerve!
It is made of EPO, a high density lightweight foam, and has an electric motor.

It is the 'green' version of the J3 Cub

A word of caution. Customer service is hard to reach, and very SLOW to respond if there is a problem. You should check their reputaion on Google before you buy. I was actually happy with this purchase, so perhapse they are hit-or-miss.

I am looking forward to getting their Giant Scale P-51 too!

Although it is not a "Giant Scale" aircraft, it is very detailed and nicely done. This little L-4 is Almost Ready To Fly out of the box. A radio set up is also included. Not a bad deal for the price. I suggest having an experienced R/C pilot check it out and help you fly it if you have no R/C flying experience. It will save time and money in repairs.

It would have been nice if they would have built it with the scale green house over the cockpit.

Thanks for the good advice regarding flying this model, TopKick- I have not flown one yet, but have seen some pretty spectacular crashes while watching first time RC pilots with no experience or help on their first flight! Back in 1954 or so, I saw a fairly large model penetrate the front fender of a new Pontiac in a full power crash - it was parked next to my Dad's car about 6 feet away! I guess they were using the old gas tubes in those days with a lot of spurious signals interfering with their transmissions. Oh, BTW, I ordered one of these L-4s yesterday....

You are totally welcome. What turns most folks off to radio control aircraft is their misconception that it is something anyone can do, but get their hopes dashed when they crash their brand new model into terra firma on their initial flight. Most cities have a R/C club and flying field in the local proximity. Most clubs usually have tons of experienced instructors who will assist you free of charge. I encourage the buddy box system to learn. The instructor has the "Main" transmitter with a trainer cable electronically plugged into the "Student Pilot" transmitter. This system allows the instructor to merely flip a switch to save the aircraft from any mistakes the student may make. Radio controlled aircraft range from inexpensive to thousands of dollars. I alway say, "Never commit to the Wild Blue more than you are willing to lose". I have scratch built scale aircraft that others in my club said were too pretty to fly. Below is a Top Flite Gold Edition C-47 I completed. All markings were hand painted by yours truly.




Radio Control Aircraft modeling and flying is a great hobby. Best of luck with your air adventure.
