M998

Post by 42GPW » Tue Nov 23, 2021 3:49 pm

So when i was assigned to the 82nd Airborne back in 1990 (HHC 2/325 A.I.R.) I was an m998 driver in an 81 mm mortar platoon, 1 gun. I drove that same Humvee through the first Gulf War and it was in the same platoon for the six years I was there. I've always had a desire to purchase a 998. I've been in the flat Fender world for about 20 years. If I was looking for a 998, in operational condition with the title. what would I be looking at price wise? Low-to-high. Thanks for the help.

Hey Matt.
First Thanks for your service.
Pricing is all over the place.
You want a true M998 ? 6.2 w/3 speed tranny no park?
Not a 10 series like 1045 ? , Armament carrier, Slant back, X doors, turret. TOW varient.
I think most of the very early trucks release way back in the 90's were mostly 998's. 85's-, 86's-, and 87-year truck's.
Nowadays the are mostly newer varients.
A truck with a title doesn't always mean your going to get it licensed for the street in your state
Some states are not allowing it. I'd start there first.
Best way is to find one that is already registered and plated in your state.
Are you a wrench turner? I only ask because there are very few mechanics that work on them. Parts aren't always locally available from a normal auto parts store.
I'd say you can maybe find a HMMWV maybe not a true M998 in 10K - 12K range but it's going to need some work. (low end)
30K plus for something pretty much restored on up. ( high end)
Then you will find some up armored varients in the 75-150 K range.

Gov planet is still selling HMMWV's at auction but you don't always know what your going to get.
Don't forget your wait time and also auction fees , and transportation on top of the sales price.

Best of luck in your search.

Matt, Coming out of the military the trucks will have either a 6.2L or a 6.5L GM engine. Right now the early trucks have been reset with their 6.2s replaced with 6.5s but you never know until you open it up and look at the engine. The easiest way to tell is with the doghouse off take a look at the RPM sensor that mounts where the distributor would be in a gas engine. If the hold down bolt is on the left it's a 6.2L engine. If it's on the right it's the "right" engine being a 6.5. Most later trucks will have 6.5L engines and may or may not have a 4 speed trans. Easiest way to tell that is by looking at the shift knob. If it's a tapered cylinder it's the 3 speed TH400. If the knob is cylindrical it's a 4L80 4 speed.

Being a wrencher is a plus when you own one of these money pits! It'll take up more of your time that an obsessed girlfriend. If your married hopefully your wife REALLY REALLY loves you! LOL

Don't expect to fine a local mechanic that will have anything to do with it.

Best of all, have a blast with it. They're a ton of fun when it's really yours, except for those times when you break it and have to fix it yourself.

Matt,
I have a 1987 M1037 6.2, 3sp, 2 door soft top from the Atlanta auction, 99 ish, that I'm going to sell (Ohio title now, MI bites!). Will include extra parts from my barns.

You have to check what your state allows for titling humvees.

Pm me if interested.

You should be able to find a very nice truck for $15k and even a bit lower if you shop around.
The early 3 speed truck prices are getting shilacked a bit from all the M1123’s being dumped by GP.
Don’t pay attention to the $25k on up M998’s when 4 speeds with 23miles since reset are selling for below $10k delivered.

M998's that run are basically $7,500 to $15,000+ depending on 2 man or 4 man, options and condition in my opinion.

Missouri isnt that much of a problem titling a humvee as long as you have a valid title from another state, one titled in Missouri already (easiest), or have the title option if getting it through govplanet.

If its out of state or a GP unit more than likely will have to get the vin verified by the Highway patrol since its a 6 didgit vin most of the time. You will get a reject letter from the DMV. Get an inspection to fill out the Form 551 by MSHP and send back in then you get a title. Title will state "non-usa std motor vehicle" which is Missouri's way of saying it doenst have a 17 digit VIN. But still can be licensed for the road.

If your looking for one, I have a couple I need to sell. Im located between Clinton,MO and Kansas City.

Andrew
