m1165 humvee fuel tank hits driveshaft
Hi,
Has anyone had an issue with the fuel tank hitting the driveshaft? Actually it is the shield on the fuel tank that hits the driveshaft.
Notes: It only really is an issue with a full heavy tank. and mostly when turning hard right. the tank is strapped in, bolts on side of tank are tight, however I can't see the top bolts. The bolts have a shoulder and are run up to the shoulder. I am wondering if I should swap them out and get a full thread bolt and crank that sucker down?
Fuel tank doesn't look like its been out, but who knows.
Thanks!
Dave

The tank should be almost against the RH frame rail. The front end of the tank is more likely to have shifted over. The 2 rear vertical straps bolt to the body so can't really go anywhere. The 2 vertical front straps have a "T" on the top end, just like the bottom of the straps next to the frame rail. Those 2 front strap tops fit into a cutout in the body, then twisted 90 degrees. There is a bump in the middle of each slot. The straps need to sit on the RH side of those bumps.
With the tank supported undo the bolt on the front straps. Lift off the bottom strap. Now, you should be able to just push each vertical strap up and to the right. Then put back together.
If your tank is already against the frame rail all the way down, the tank isn't the problem. Maybe the shield. The forward shield only has one bolt. The center shield has 3 bolts (one to the front and one at each rear corner. Maybe a bolt fell out.
When the bolt on each strap is tightened, there should be about 1/2" between the side strap and the bottom strap.
I just put my tank back in yesterday.

What Jason said. Bolts can be changed if you want but check alignment on front first.

sounds great. I will check the front straps for misalignment, and get back to the board with progress!
The shield is good, bolted in 100%.
thanks,
Dave

Re: m1165 humvee fuel tank hits driveshaft
Well, solved. I tried moving fuel tank by adjusting straps, it was already tight against frame. The shield on fuel tank was hitting the driveshaft weight on front of rear drive shift.
I took off the shield and beat it with a hammer. Took a couple of test fits but now it doesn't rub when full of fuel!
Thanks
Dave
