Bolting up the chassis tight

Post by ohiohmmwv » Wed Aug 25, 2021 5:15 pm

Are there any guidelines I can follow regarding torquing the bolts on the chassis and squaring the chassis up? From the smaller to largest bolts? Should I locktite them as well? I’m getting close.

All your nuts should be stover lock nuts, absolutely no locktite on any chassis bolts required or used.

Ah yes that makes sense. Any rule of thumb I can follow for torque specs on the various sizes?

Appendix E in the back of the TM 9-2320-280-20-3 manuals is torque specs chart for all the hardware used in the HMMWV. Just follow that.

I did EVERY bolt on my truck by hand. No impact or power ratchet. If there was a torque listed in the TM, I did that.
I do know that all of the chassis bolts are 90 lb/ft. The 1/2" ones that use a 19mm or 3/4 inch head and nuts.

There is a diagram somewhere online of the H1 chassis, and it list measurements from designated spots to square it all up. I will see if I can find mine.

Or put the body mounts on the frame, so you have a small hole to find the center of. Measure diagonal, from corner to corner, the distance of the holes on the body. Transfer those measurements to the chassis to make sure they are the same. I don't know how much the rear will change from flexing, though.
