I do not know the specs but it seems to be an enamel. It does get affected by acid so I don't know why they use it. Here is my new tub battery box.

It may just be that black is an easier paint to obtain in NON-CARC enamel application for motor-pools, so they ended up making the space black VS Green CARC which you would have to have a hazmat setup to touch up the paint.

Never seen a black area until your photos showed up in the above photo, but if painting black battery area I would recommend a bed liner type material for acid resistance.

Itrpd: Since yours was green from the factory/military, why paint it black :?:

If you want a good, durable black finish in your battery box use Rhinoliner or one of the numerous bedliners out there. They're the correct black color and are acid resistant.

The only reason I wanted to paint it black was that I thought that black was the correct paint for newer hmmwv, thanks, ralph

Quick question

On the rh side of the box being the separation between battery and slave, what is the metal loop used for and the strap, have seen an fire ext in there, what usually goes in that space?

Thank you

The Rhino Liner Kurt suggested is probably as good as it gets and has the correct appearance. I used to use GI Issue Battery Box paint in my earlier M-Series Vehicles, it is not as durable.

That is for M998 A0 trucks to hold first aid kit. They then removed them since first aid kits and battery acid do not mix well.

I keep a gallon of distilled water there for either the batteries or the cooling system. It's also a good place to mount your solargizer electronics box.

If you want it to be authentic, the battery box should be black, but with a touch of IDGAF 383 overspray, at least according to my 2011. :D

It came that way. At least half of my Humvees came with some sort of non-conductive material on the major power contacts.
