I keep seeing guys on the SS site that are putting plywood and other things on top of the w/s frame, bows, and b-pillar...under the top. Wouldn't you think that will eventually wear holes in the tops?

Yes, as you drive the wind will beat the cover down onto the plywood and it will eventually hole it. On my 151 I went with a very thin fiberglass panel to prevent the water from pooling on the top but it's not thick enough to leave a raised corner and cause problems.

try cutting down some pool noodle.

Pool noodles won't stop the water from pooling up on the top. The whole purpose behind the panels is to prevent it.
