88 would have had the early style steering link bar. However it may have been upgraded and if it was then yes the Civi ones would work

How does one tell the difference - metal thickness of the part?

Here is a photo looking forward towards the Idler arm. Note that the pivot shaft is straight with no bend and that there is a spacer block between the shaft and the frame. Different companies made these upgrade idlers and I have seen a type with two round spacers for where the mounting bolts pass through. Either works good, it is just a different way of making the part work. This is the first upgrade type as far as I know, but there are at least two versions of it because of the manufacturers. If you have the idler with the bend in the pivot shaft, this idler won't work with your drag link. The upgrade includes the idler, pitman arm and the drag link. Even if you have the first setup and you replace the idler with same, you might keep your eyes open to buy the upgrade parts when you see them available at a good price, because they last longer. If anyone notices that my facts are mixed up, definitely speak up!

Here's some types....first one on left is a HD one and is the second style and thicker than the original.
Second is a Moog HD one.
Third is a Mood HD for the REV. frame / steering system { wont fit 99 % of trucks out there }.
Here is a AO/A1 steering link, and a A2 link.

Thanks for the pics - that explains the differences. I received my parts during the day and installed earlier tonight. The Idler looks just like the first one - hats off to KASCAR for the quick shipping.

Just found this thread. Really informative.
I've just started to upgrade my M998 to the A2 version idler, Pittman and drag link.
