Kinda looks like what my Army buddy referred to as "God's Eye"... thermal/NV scope and laser designator. They were using one near the end of "Restrepo".
"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"

The Fire Support Sensor System (FS3) is a long-range multisensor system for the U.S. Army forward observer, providing the real-time ability to detect, recognize, identify and geo-locate targets. The FS3 is the premier ground combat surveillance and fire support system on the modern battlefield.
The FS3 enables Army forward observers to conduct 24-hour fire support missions, remaining outside threat acquisition and engagement ranges. The FS3 replaces multiple obsolete systems, providing superior performance, new capabilities and enhanced maintainability.
Cheers

Re: What the heck is this?
The square box is the chassis of an LRAS3 Long Range scout IR/day camera sensor....used on Strykers, HMMVW's and M1200 armored knights. It is a really neato night vision sensor with mediocre (rarely used) day camera installed. When combined with a laser designator unit and some computing resources, it becomes the FS3...a Fire Support sensor capable of lasing targets a long ways away. These things are still in use and are considered ITARS restricted...it is odd that you were able to get one. Even gutted. The yoke it is sitting on is designed so that an operator (standing in an open basket turret on top whatever vehicle this is installed in) is able to point the LRAS or FS3 at exactly what he wants to, and get a 10-digit grid coordinate of the target.
The IR cameras inside these sensors are the same ones that are installed on the M1 and M2's (both as gunners sights and as commanders independent viewers). I would be shocked if they had not removed that camera from this chassis before selling it.
