Windshield Wiper Motor Install??!!
I have been searching the books and can't find info on how to install the wiper motor. My truck didn't have one when I got it, but I picked one up. I can't figure out how to attach the arms to the motor... Any suggestions, or anyone know where I can find a tutorial on the subject?

Pablo,
Both of the arms require a plastic bushing with a hole all the way through it (yours deem to not have these). The slip over the ball shaft on the crank arm of the wiper motor output shaft. Once assembled, then the clip hold them on. Clear as mud?!

Re: Windshield Wiper Motor Install??!!
I guess my pic is bad... The holes go all the way through on the bushings, and I can see how they go over the motor output shaft, with the clip holding it in place. My problem is clearance. With the arms inside the windshield frame, how do I get them to clip onto the shaft, and install the clip??Ted Gates wrote:Pablo,

I saw one illustration in the manuals showing the motor drive shaft removed, then installed to the arms, then the motor reinstalled. I can't see how to reinstall the motor to the shaft, as there will be no room to get any tools in there.
I'm pretty sure I'm just missing something really obvious, and this should be a simple job...
Thanks again for the help!

Paul,
It is a PIA. I leave the crank arm on the motor and with long flat blade screw driver, I pry on the plastic bushings. Then a small screwdriver to place clip.

Re: Windshield Wiper Motor Install??!!
I do the opposite...I take the pivot off the motor, then take 9/16 socket' put it behind the arms and pivot plastic and hit the flat portion of the pivot, this will force the 2 balls of the pivot to pass through and seat, I would use new plastic....I don't bother with the clip, I have never had them fall off.
Now put the pivot back on I the motor, this can be a blotch, but it can be done...make sure the pivot head is set to point to the Left, if you don't set it right, your wiper arms will try and park on top of your roof.....

If you with Steve's way, make sure you don't allow the socket to disappear!
Sometimes a channel lock pliers with press the bushing/arms on. And yes, use new bushings. If you are unsure of the wiper position (as Steve mentions), remove wipers before activating!

Yes, take the wipers off....the motor when turned off sets the pivot to the same rest position every time.
I can't tell you how many times I have put it on wrong and watched my wiper arms and blades bury into the roof...

Re: Windshield Wiper Motor Install??!!
Thanks for the advice guys! I put a 9/16ths socket under the arms (with string taped to it, to aid in removal. I then just pushed the the wiper motor down until the new plastic bits were seated. I was able to move it around enough to put the clip on too, so I'm pretty happy with the result. I'm not installing the new wiper arms until the windshield frame and batteries are installed so I can test it out.
One more thing off the check list, getting closer to being back on the road!
Thanks again,
Paul D

Re: Windshield Wiper Motor Install??!!
I just did this job maybe a month ago. What I found was the brushes in the motor had worn down over the years and were arcing inside the motor. This burnt out the small choke on the DC input to the motor. I found the choke and brushes on Ebay and repaired my motor for about $15. The brushes are 5mm x 5mm about 12mm long. 12mm is too long so I did need to sand them down a bit and re-arced them with a small 1/2 round file to fit the commutator.

Re: Windshield Wiper Motor Install??!!
Thanks sir. I wished a motor was there to 'repair', but I dont have anything there at all.
At this point I may even look for a used - non working one and try to repair it. I need the wipers, my eyes are failing me in these late years.
I will see if I can locate those bushings you note below.

Are you wanting the newer style or the old style? I havea used newer style with remote switch. I can test to see if it still works.

Re: Windshield Wiper Motor Install??!!
The shaft that the wiper arms attach too via the bushings is different. There is different clocking to it so you can't just leave the old style one in place and swap motors. I know, because I tried to save having to mess with the wiper arms and bushings.Kurt Lesser wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 7:15 amOther than the position of the motor aren't they interchangable Ted? Re: Windshield Wiper Motor Install??!!
Thanks for clearing this up George. Do you know if the entire wiper motor drive plates can be swapped as a unit?
