Coffee & Donuts on the Runway Display Sonoma 8/15/21

Post by John Neuenburg » Wed Jul 07, 2021 9:47 am

Sonoma Valley Airport in the wide spot in the road called Schelleville between Sonoma Raceway and town of Sonoma is hosting another "cars and coffee" type event with a twist - it will be on a runway and taxiway and include classic and ex-military airplanes with cars, hot rods, trucks, MVs! There are many based at this airport. It will be Sunday August 15 from 0800 to 1030 which means vehicles will start showing up at 0700. How about we have a MV display and group photo next to a P40N or P51? I don't know if they will fly anything but last time they did a small car/plane event they had an aerobatic box authorized and several planes took turns in the air. If you know you will be there, send me an email so I know how much space to grab. Otherwise just show up.

Location is 29982 Arnold Drive, Sonoma, CA

If you want to make a day of it, consider a visit to Sonoma for lunch, shopping, or wine tasting. A good place to take a date. Another option is to take a warbird ride after the show. The owner of the airport operates Vintage Aircraft Company and they offer rides in Stearman biplanes, SNJ-4 advanced trainer (Navy version AT-6 Texan), P51D Mustang, even a rare, factory two seat P40N! They have an aerobatic option in the biplanes and the front seats are modded to fit two slender people. They take walk-ins on the weekends but confirm that at 707-938-2444. Website is www.vintageaircraft.com. Tell them I sent you! (they are my landlord)

Nice half-day event of cross-pollinating vintage car, MV, and airplane hobbies. Thanks to Chris at Sonoma Valley Airport for closing the airport to do this event.

Local GPW owner Paul Clenahan hasn't had his jeep for long but in his travels has found four other WWII jeep owners in the Town of Sonoma area. We'll try to recruit them if not already in the organized hobby. Paul is MVPA and wants to attend our events and joined the MVCC two days after this event.

Airport owner has his ramp guy tug the big planes around with this M38. He has another being restored now.

The car display extended down that runway and this pic doesn't get many but you can get the idea. I didn't get a shot of more planes closer to the hangar where the coffee and fat pills were handed out....

Two HMMWVs, one on right moving to Chicago with owner but one on left is local. My jeep in center demonstrating the unfairness of WWII eye-candy at vehicle events with a bunch of old people around:

My jeep and theodolite. When the camera wasn't on I displayed a sign in a stand with info about the jeep and the early British Special Air Service Regiment. And another one with paragraphs on the importance of the jerry can, Vickers K machine gun, theodolites the LRDG and SAS used for celestial navigation in uncharted Libya, and the Lewes Bomb which was the home-made way the SAS destroyed Italian and German airplanes by the dozens before they switched from stealth sabotage raids to jeep raids with the guns. I had replica, inert bombs displayed. Hard to understand unless you see one.
