Hah hah! Now someone will offer, "Camp Jellystone-NOT Park." Oops, I just did!

Members please send your suggestions to Dave Ball this week. Publishing here doesn't qualify. I think the Board will choose a name soon.

"Camp Jack Tomlin"

He was a founding member of military vehicle collecting, he was the first president of the MVPA, he was a USMC Vietnam veteran who died from the effects of "agent orange", and a down to earth guy who promoted our hobby.

He attended ALL the California meets, till he got to sick to come anymore.

Ya I miss the guy! Camp Tomlin would be cool! He was a good friend. His stuff still comes to this show with me.....
Many of you have something that one time or another was his!

For the 50th d day anniversary he took his DUKW to England swam it across the channel to Normandy and was met by the French Military! They thought he was a invader! Seriously!

Not only that, he drove the DUKW from Utah to San Diego to load it aboard the ship! The DUKW was modded with a refrigerator for his Chevas Regal and ice.

I remember when he brought his M114 and big truck to the Patterson meet in 1987 or 1988 and then to the Wings of Victory Air Show at Hamilton Field in Novato. He was caught doing donuts in one of the vacant Air Force hangars, then was driving around the military housing area at night shooting his gas .50 being chased by DOD police. I caught hell because I was the MV coordinator.

Now we're getting somewhere. I definitely still carry or drive parts of his. Went out to his place in Tooele a few times in the 80's, what a blast, riding in his 151, shooting at rattlesnakes. Bigger than life, I mean come on, cross the channel in a DUKW? That took balls. You have my vote.

To all,

In another thread on this issue, a Sgt. Penry was mentioned who was awarded the CMH and is/was from Petaluma. The club should honor a local who received the highest award possible, no ifs, ands or buts.

The board is talking about the name for the spring meet as I write this. We are also working on the event t-shirts which will be inaugural shirts for the first time in Petaluma as well as the MVCC 40th anniversary shirt.
We need to look at the number of people that like a certain name and then add our votes and pick the name so please make it clear who you are and which name you support.
If you want to get on my list for naming the event please post here your pick and your name. Some of you I know but others I do not. :)

Thanks

I don't know if the Board made their decision but I want to repeat my suggestion, "40th Annual West Coast Military Vehicle Rally". "MV" can be substituted in ads if the readers know what a MV is. Each year it would change to "41st" "42nd" etc. I had thought of using "Swap Meet & Gathering" instead of "Rally," which is the title I put on the Basic Training page on our website, but it's too long for most advertisements. In some cases a smaller tag line could go under the title, saying "A Swap Meet & MV Gathering (or Show)."

As with Camp Delta at Tower Park Resort, the place name is what insiders will usually call it in conversation. The old meet was called "Tower Park" more than it was "Camp Delta." This one here will likely be called "Petaluma" for short.

There have been a lot of good and meaningful suggestions, many requiring explanation. The reason why I like this purely descriptive name is because that's what the Spring meet has been for 40 years. With the venue changing, it is important to tell everybody that Petaluma is the "biggie" and not just some local event. The name is oriented to the folks not paying close attention. In web event calendars we don't usually have a lot of real estate to explain things, so putting some descriptive words in the name rather than after the name saves some room. The other nice thing about this name is it's not venue-specific. We could move it to Napa County Fairgrounds or CalExpo and the name could be the same. We'd build equity in it.

Hello everyone...

The MVCC board and the members who contributed by either entering a possible name or vote for one previously added to the list for a name for the newest location for the MVCC annual spring swap meet has been tallied and we have a name for the meet. "Camp Petaluma". I want to thank all those that participated. Thank you.
