Command Car screen support

Post by awddouglas » Tue May 24, 2022 2:29 am

Hi, can anyone confirm the dimensions of these blocks on which the screen frame sits when vertical? Am presuming they are held in place by countersunk screws.

Also, what material are they made from, metal or hard rubber?

I am presuming this fitment is common to all open cab WC's?

Thanks

andrew

Hello, Andrew. I have attempted to find these 'in the wild', and it has been very challenging. I have found some very rare items, but the windscreen support brackets for the open cab 3/4T are very elusive

I am away from my WC52, but my 43 has metal ones, and I believe the two countersunk screws are within 2 inches of each other? The overall dimension is 2in x 0.5in and actually appear to be your typical, flat stock steel. When I have found them, they are rust-welded so poorly to the cowl, that the effort can be too much for the seller.

Good luck, my friend!

Hello Andrew,

Yes I have some information for you on these tabs on the cowl top on the Command Car and also WC open cabs.

Here are the measurements and of what you need.

This is on my 1943 3/4 ton Command Car.

The strip is 2 1/2 inches long,
1/2 half inch wide, and 3/8 of an inch tall.

There is also a thin strip of metal under it, maybe 18 gauge ?

The screw bolts that attach it are regular screw type heads, I assume a tapered, or countersunk, and they tighten into little flat tabs underneath the cowl.
Everything is metal.

Here you can see what the bolts thread into below the cowl, under the dash

Hello Andrew,

A couple more pics to figure out the center point of the bolts, if you have to make a set.
They do get rusted away !
If your cowl is still good, you may have the attaching points under there still.
Hopefully they are there, as it will an easier job attaching new blocks to the cowl.

If I am reading it right, it looks like the center point of each bolt is 3/8 of an inch in from each end of the steel support block.

Keep us posted on your Command Car project !!!

Best Regards,
Ray

Thank you, Ray, for the very detailed dimensions. It took a good bit of precious time to post all of those, so we sure appreciate it.

Hello Andrew,

You are welcome !
I am glad to help and hope you can get some originals, from a G member, or make a set up for your command car !

How is your command car coming along ?

Did you need the parts of the side wall between the front and back seat, between the door entry cut outs ?
The sections were on ebay last week, one sold, but I think the other is still available ?

Best Regards,
Ray

Run out of steam a bit at the moment, and i have been lazy, i should start a thread on it to share experiences and learnings with fellow Gee members. This is the beauty of the Gee, it helps others !

But direct answer, 2 CC (A wc56 from france and the chassis/rear tub/axles WC58 from midwest mil) have been merged to create 1 WC58. So far, the following have been stripped, repaired, repainted and refitted.
1. Chassis/running boards
2. Front axle/diff/steering
3. Transfer case
4. Rear axle casing
5. Brake lines
6. Tank and chassis fuel lines
7. Rad and cowl
8. Set of combat wheels fitted with new repro Firestones.

Gearbox is stripped, repaired and repainted
New chassis loom and rear lights fitted
Fenders stripped and repaired
Engine block stripped and machined, new pistons, crank polished, new bearings - build starts this saturday
Most ancillaries are stripped, repaired and repainted

Bodywork, i have farmed out. The cowl and bulkhead are almost finished - metalwork done. Hope the rear bodywork will be started on soon.

My target is october for it to be running and driving and ready for our UK MOT test.... I got the french WC56 first in August 2020 so be just over 2 years. Planning on going to Arnhem in it in 2023 and then Normandy in 2024.

Regards

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

WoW !!!
You actually have gotten a tremendous amount of work done so far !!
You can be proud of that effort :D :D

That sounds like a great schedule, and we will certainly be looking forward to pictures of all your restoration efforts.
Please do start a post on your Command Car, as it will help us all get motivation and inspiration to keep moving forward !
Every little thing , helps to keep us all motivated, for the big push, towards the ultimate objective of a restored vehicle and its future enjoyment .
Arnhem and Normandy are calling !!
:D :D
I have started a post on my WC-56, and it helps me keep focus on it, even though I am restoring a jeep right now with my time and efforts.
It does take a lot of time and energy, but it is rewarding and fun at the same time.

It would be a great thing to have your restoration documented right here on the G as well.
I am sure there are a few G members that have projects that have slowed down, but seeing others working on theirs will inspire us all.

Best Regards,
Ray

I have a pair on one of the parts truck, but the amount of work to get those off would be a lot and might even ruin the cab. I'm sorry.
