MU Winch cable attachment

Post by BATMOBILE1 » Thu Jan 27, 2022 10:56 am

Hi sorry for the newbie question but im trying to figure out how the cable attaches to the winch drum..?

I have two winch drums both with the same casting number on them , but one had two small holes that fit perfectly with the U clamp to fix the cable to the drum, this is on my spare drum and not fitted to my 1/2 ton ..the one i have on my 1/2 ton has an oval slot , so when you put the U clamp through it doesn't have anything to clamp to, should it have an oval washer with two holes.?

Id rather not have to swap my drums over just because of the Oval slot.

Has anyone else come across this or has the drum been Bubba'd..? :o

I'm no expert on them but from what you describe, it sounds modified. It sounds to me that somebody has slotted an opening between what would normally be the two holes that the clamp goes into?? Is that right? No idea why anybody would do that.
Even if so, I would think that you could make a plate to cover that opening and maybe even need one on the outside too and still use the drum.
Realistically the clamp only holds so much. Most of the "grip" is from the friction of the cable on the drum as its pulled tight. That's why they always recommend at least 3-4 winds of cable on the drum at a minimum before you start pulling on it.
Of course if you want totally correct and original, I suspect you will end up swapping out the drum.

Hi Gyknot,

Yes thats what i thoughts friend of mine is restoring a WC-24 as well and his drum is the same as mine, it doesn't look like its been cut and made bigger but it may have been i guess, strange that ive seen two now though.

Thank you for your input .

Does sound odd to find two alike if they were modified.
If you can find a way to post a picture of what it looks like that would be great. Now I'm curious.

Ok here ive attached pictures of the two different winch drums i have they both have the same casting number , but one has a slot and the other has two holes to clamp the winch cable, you will notice the clamp positions are in different places on the drum, one has a cut out on the inner ring where its higher and the other is positioned at the point where the inner ring is lower and doesn't need the cut out.
Ive now made a clamp washer to fit over the oval hole so i can clamp my cable , and have installed the cables couldn't remove the two keys on the winch arm to swap the drums over without damaging the keys and having to replace them.
So has anyone else noticed the diference , and have i installed it correctly ?

I still don't think the slot makes any sense, but as I said I am not the expert on these that you need to find. Looking at it, I'm not sure how bubba would have successfully made that slot without really making a mess of things. Maybe it's how they did it??
With that said, I like your solution and see no reason it should not work.

Hi Gynot,

Ive posted this question on the 1/2 ton command car forum on facebook and came to the conclusion the slotted drum is correct and the drum with the two fixing holes is for the later MU-2 winch, the black drum in my photos comes from a MU-2A so a later type.
So all good, and cable fitted.
