1963 Dodge M-37B1 Paint Recommendation

Post by johnseidts » Thu Apr 16, 2020 10:44 am

Hi,
I am advising a paint job on a 1963 Dodge M37B1. The owner wants it painted as a USMC vehicle from the time period. Is Gillespie WWII USMC Forest Green or regular Forest Green more appropriate? What is the difference?

24087 originally. Did the Marines repaint them? Call Rapco and ask them about the colors; there are only two distributors for that paint.

It is currently in its original US Army paint. The owner is a USMC Vietnam veteran. He would like it to look like a USMC truck around the time of Khe Sanh.

24052 is the Forrest Green, Semi Gloss used by the Marines from 1950 to 1975. The semi gloss is a good choice as it takes abuse better than the lusterless version. Is his M37 a USMC variant? They are different from the standard Army issue M37, but the differences are mainly bolt on, so can be corrected easily enough. That vintage will use yellow lettering and numbers.

Thanks for the information. It is an Army M-37B1. I don't think we will do many upgrades to it other than a paint job.

The distinguishing feature of a Marine M37 are the welded lifting eyes on the corners of the front bumper. The 24052 is a great Marine color. Have it on my mule. I would do my M37 in it in second, but it is an Army M37, which should be 24087. Don't know if the Marines repainted them in 24052, but it would definitely look good, especially with the yellow numbering.

Here are two M37s; one early contract and one late. A 53 and a 63. Note the different colors.

The earlier G-741 trucks were 2430 SG O.D. the factory changed to 24087 in late 60's. I remember seeing a new 1968 Dated M-37B1 in 24087.
I'll bet Bill Kish would know.

The Marine M-37s are not some Army cast-offs, repainted Forrest Green. They were procured by the Marines and is shows on their data plates.

What would be the correct color for a 1952 M43 ambulance?
