What’s it Worth
Have always wanted to buy a Carryall. Active duty military pilot, with a passion for old military vehicles. Completely new to buying antique cars so I’m hoping I can lean on your experience and expertise. What’s she worth based on what you can see from online ad. Lockdown makes it impossible to go see in person right now, but I want to start negotiations.

That truck is going to need a FULL restoration if you plan on using it, in my opinion. There are some guys on here who really know those 1/2 carryalls. I imagine they will drop in here.

looks like a great start but plan on major work to just get engine tranny and brakes in and working. it depends on if you do the work or pay other.

I think what has happened to the economy in the past few weeks, prices will draop, more vehicles will become available and less buyers will be pulling the trigger. JMO I'm a bit of a bottom feeder, I don't actively look for projects but they seem to find me if the price is right. I would think this vehicle or a similar condition one could be found shortly in the $5k to $6,500k range.
Again, you'd have to put your hands on it and see what it had and what it needs and who is going to finance the restoration. Fully restored, these are in the $15k range, IMO, and you don't want to get upside down on it unless it is a labor of love like they are to a lot in the hobby. To others, it's just dollars and sense.

If you are looking at going original, I would want a good look at the engine compartment.
The lack of an installed motor along with the non-original: swinging pedal assembly; accelerator pedal; steering wheel; radiator, makes me suspect it may have had a small-block Chevrolet conversion in the past.
Also look to see if the original steering gear box is in place.
These Dodges were designed with only an inline 6-cylinder motor available.
The engineers aligned the steering column fairly straight with the longitudinal centerline of the frame, which often interferes with a V-8 conversion due to the extra width of the V-type motor.

That seems to be priced double what it is worth
as others have said, no engine, wrong steering and pedals. wrong seats
The frame was modified for the winch. Carryalls never had winches fromt he factory
4 to 5 grand if the body is nice, it what i would say

i think that one is 5k too high as well. should include the complete drivetrain at that price, at a minimum and be somewhat complete. no denying that a rust free example (if its true) is highly desirable. there was one like this in utah at 1/3 of the price last year and it has its drivetrain

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I had the same thoughts on price, especially with missing components. I am looking for either an early 40s carryall or early 50s PW. Doing most of the work myself it has to be rust free, or at least mostly. Running condition would be a major factor as well.

Well, not exactly either, but Dodge M37s are great trucks, have the Military look in spades and can be had for good prices.
There were ones with and ones without factory winches. All these trucks are incredibly slow by todays standards. 50mph is too fast.
Maybe share with us your intended use?

Yes, I was going to say as well; for your first MV, and the fact that you like Dodges places you into a superior category, GET an M37. They are the best starter MV for sure, unlike jeeps which guys like but they are just toys and are deathtraps when someone texting slams you from the side. or rear. At least with an M37 you have 3 tons of iron and real doors around you. Disclaimer; I have 5 jeeps too. And have had more.
M37s are easy to restore, all parts are readily available and are fun to drive. I have had at least 4 of them. And easy to get, not all rusted out; the sheet metal is three times thicker than a jeep. You can get them in the $3k range easily. Parts are all available from VPW.
Then later you can branch out into the more obscure and expensive, 1/2 ton, carryalls, etc.
Here are two; one is a 53 and the other a 63, from the two contracts. They are different in many ways.
Note the Michelin Radials; and it has 4.89 gears; it will go 65 easily. Stock ones, like the left one, won't but they are still fun.

Overall goal would be to preserve a bit of history, but not necessarily trying to be perfect original match or museum quality. I would use it as a weekend cruiser and truck to drive around the farm and trails. Seeing as I’m quite new at this I don’t want to have to replace lots of rusted panels or areas with cancer. Trying to take advantage of being on orders out west and find a rust free truck that runs. Don’t care about condition of paint or interior as much as something I can drive and update/upgrade slowly. I would keep it period correct with body and interior, but probably update drivetrain/suspension (4BT Cummins) eventually. I am seeking a 51-56 Power Wagon but like the M37 as well. Leaning towards PW due to my roof lines and body shape. Please help me keep eyes open for one and offer advise on price as I don’t want to get taken advantage of/nor buy a piece of junk that’s too much work or not salvageable.

Early PWs are all the rage now and their prices are steadily climbing, food for thought.

Yes, Power Wagons are far more desirable and costly than an M37, and do not ride better; the M37 suspension was developed post war; the PWs use the old type of spring hangers. Look at Midwest Military; they have a power wagon on the site. Call Vintage PW; they usually have them or know who does.
Why are you looking only at 51-56 PW? They are the same from 47 to 68 except for the bed sides and the 251 engine from 61 on.
I have a 67 WM300, I restored it in 2000; not for sale though. They will go for $30K. Or so.

Just read that you intend to butcher the drive train; get an M37 please. Leave the Power Wagons original.
