Re: Wtb winch cable clevis
What you are looking for are the winch cable clamps that consist of two nuts and a split bolt. The cable clevis you appear to be referring to is the later type SOCKET. Wire Rope Cable. which does include a clevis as part of the assembly.

Re: Wtb winch cable clevis
Safe-Line looks like a good bet except for 7/16" cable. I have 3/8" GI Surplus, the others have been picked clean.

Thanks for the additional information and confirmation Fred. Your library is obviously more comprehensive than mine and you know how to use it.

David:
I enjoy cracking open the books and researching answers to Dodge questions. I try to be brief yet thorough and cite my data sources so others can follow the trail and perhaps learn a little more about the research process. The WW II Dodges are my favorite military vehicles; they combine then state-of-the-art engineering with flawless good looks -- there is not a false or superfluous line on the 3/4-ton 4x4 and 1-1/2 ton 6x6 Dodge trucks. Over the decades I have collected many manuals and parts lists for them to increase my knowledge of, and deepen my appreciation for, these sturdy military vehicles. Thanks for providing me another opportunity to dive deep into interesting Dodge data.

Re: Wtb winch cable clevis
Oh my Lord guys a wealth of information within all these posts !!!!
And thank you Fred for all your knowledge I'm sure we have all learned from it !!
I've been busy working on the body so this is the first time I've had a chance to log in.
I guessed originally it must have been 7/16 cable for the 1/2 tons as that is what vpw sell for it.
They also do a 7/16 clamp too but unfortunatly looks nothing like the twin nut version ;o(
I'm still perplexed as to the total length of 7/16 the drum will take just guesstimates !!! Based on the 1/2 inch.
That unfortunatly doesn't take into account whether you could still use the handcrank.
So l might just have to buy 100ft or more 7/16 manila rope and try it out before splashing out on fibre core steel cable.
I'll post my findings once l do.
As to the double nut Hmmm not quite sure how I'll overcome that?
Guess l could get a swaged end and thimble in the hope later to come across the 7/16 twin nut version.
Although the saddle clamps also work there just so unsightly and do drag debris when in use
But thanks everyone think we've all learnt a great deal from this thread!!!!!

Re: Wtb winch cable clevis
I suppose the need to hand crank the winch model meant just unspooling a crap load of cable to the point you could get her started, then rewind the cable with the running engine. Basically assigning the hand crank task as an emergency level below the possibility of a need to get unstuck or use the winch.
Or the engineers just missed it and said "DOH!"

Re: Wtb winch cable clevis
Think your right Winget !!!
I found 70ft of 1/2 manila rope that l wound on the drum
Result was 2 1/2 neat layers !!
About a third of the drum flange height If that.
Now to see if l could use the handcrank???
Not a chance to use it the winch can only have one layer of rope!!!!!
So it's either a very big DOH
Or the repo crank bracket is way off how far it drops down??
So looks like l will be altering that crank bracket thats for sure!!!!
My priorities are slightly different to your suggestion.
I want to be able to turn the engine over now an again as it wont be a daily driver.!!!
And l sure dont want to unravel down to a single layer to do so!!!
And 150ft would only take up 3/4 the drum flange height

Re: Wtb winch cable clevis
Minor tidbit, the third hole in the fold down crank plate is for storage position at a right angle to the bracket allowing free movement of the winch cable. It is normally stowed "up" and you would need a wrench to lower it, again giving circumstantial evidence that handcranking a winch model Dodge was not very common occasion in the Dodge engineering department view.

Re: Wtb winch cable clevis
Ha,
Must have been!!
As they could have designed that crank bracket so You'd only need to remove one nut an bolt to swivel it down!!!
Not both!!
I'm rather surprised they didn't make it so it could.
Dodge were pretty smart in many other designs.
It would only be a matter of that third hole being repositioned.
However it could also be the repo bracket is incorrect.
Anyone have an original to check?

All 3/8" cable clamps are sold. I still have a few 1/2" and 5/8" ones for sale.
