If l can't find a 7/16" one then 1/2 would be my next choice.
3/8 would be to small

I would love to have a photo of what was original, I'll wait till i get home for the manual I suppose.

Right now (since I 1st put her together)I have a new style yoke on my galvanized cable (came from jump towers at Fort Benning when they were rotating out the old cable) when I asked the tensile strength Jumpmaster stated I wouldn't break it...I know better, but it is some really good stuff based on lifting the rig into the air multiple times per hour each day for years with a airborne candidate hanging off it.

PS: Little understood problem with Dodge Braden MU-2 winch...if you put too much cable on the drum...you cannot use the hand crank to start the engine as it won't go through the drop down crank guide clearing the wound cable into the crank shaft nut.

I got very familiar with that cable when in Airborne school. Much scarier than jumping from a plane because in the air, I had a reserve. On the cable on the 34 foot, or 250 foot, towers, no reserve. If you fall, you die.
Are those cables fiber core? Or steel core.

Can't remember, it lay's well on the drum, but i think it's actually a little skinnier than I should have on her. (I want to say 3/8") One day I may opt for the correct diameter and proper end connector, but I've only used the winch about 5 times (real use) in 20 years, most things can be done with just a chain and vehicle gear ratio, etc. never had to force a self recovery with her.

Cable is 1/2" 6X19 lay. Fibre Core same as CCKW. The ORD No for the Clamp is 500821, and is that same double nut style as used on CCKW. The Clamps are very hard to find.

Just a quick search on Google and the working load limit on 1/2" 6X19 lay. Fibre Core cable is only 4720Lbs... just a little more than 1/2 weight of the 3/4T, and probably 1/3rd of a CCKW.
Don't doubt that's what the specs call for but it seems like a low WLL.

CCKW Winch load capacity is 10,000 lb. The 1/2 " Cable used on WC is same spec as CCKW.

All winch ratings are made on the first layer of rope.
Time you get 100ft on a drum that rating no longer is valid !!
Snatch blocks were part of every winch mounted truck.
To in theory halve the load on a winch.
But that does not take friction etc into account.
Joel where did you get the 6x19 fibre core cable specs from for a 3/4 t ?
I have a 1/2 t and can find no referrence to any cable size let alone length for it ???
W Winget
1/2 & 3/4 t Mu's had a 5000# rating
If your cable lays well then it's most probably fibre core.
Steel core can be a pain at times

Got it from ORD 8 and 9 WC SNLS, plus late CCKW ORD 8. WC and CCKW Share same type cable. It takes some work to look up
I'll trace my steps when I get time.

Any update on the information you posted Joel?
As I'd like to order some cable but without knowing a length or a diameter not easy other than a guess

Will give it a try tonite.
The clamps are now hard to come by as the type originally used on MV's of that period are longtime obsolete.

Hi Winget:

Here is a photo of the very rare 7/16th vintage cable nut used on WW II Dodge military truck winches:

Image

. . . and to round out this post, here is a photo of an original WW II Dodge American Chain & Cable hook on the end of the tail chain:

Image

As Zoob implies, the 4-piece 7/16ths cable nuts are impossible to find loose. I never found one in 40 years of looking, but found 3/8" and 1/2" cable nuts. The 7/16" cable nut in the photo, along with the tail chain hook, both came with my 1945 Dodge T233 Utility Truck winch. Enjoy!
