Re: Zeph's Dodge WC26 Carryall Restoration
Hello Zeph,
Stay very safe and get out and away from the terrible fires out there, especially with the high temps coming !!!
Best wishes to you and your family, and for your great homestead and your vehicle collection!
The Hardie Board siding should be fire proof, and things hopefully will be a-ok !!! especially if any flames stay low.
God Bless and Protect you and your family, and homestead, and all the good people of California in harms way !!!
Best Wishes,
Raymond

Thanks guys. So far so good. Temps dropped like a rock. Almost 11 pm and down to 80 degrees with 51% humidity. Most importantly, it is dead calm out there vs. the past two nights when the wind was blowing hard. Will stay alert and we are prepared to bolt if the evac. order comes. Feeling much better now based on the conditions.

Hello,
That is good to hear about the cooling off, and the winds dropping.
I can see the smoke in your photo, hopefully it will bypass your area !!!

Hi zeph,
Looks like the fire is heading more in a westerly direction. My Cousin is worried about his place which is about 10 miles south of your place. Hope the fire line holds. Stay safe. Lives over machinery any day of the week

Still hanging. And it's still burning. Not unpacking just yet. Smoke was as thick as ever today. I toured some of the neighborhoods earlier today that are still under evacuation orders. The lose of homes and the devastation is brutal. Saw three bulldozers that tried to out run the fire and didn't make it. One operator killed. In the same area I saw where the firefighter's truck that was blown about 300 feet off the road into the trees killing him. I would never believed that a fire tornado could do that if I didn't see it myself. Very sad for the losses. Seven deaths so far that they know about.

Looks like it's settling down. A shot I took over our little City looking west at 6 am this morning. Fire is to the west about 2 miles out. Really smoky:

Re: Zeph's Dodge WC26 Carryall Restoration
Expletive! I spent some quality time out in the garage today, but then just found out the fire jumped the line north of us and the wind is blowing right at us. I'll have to get an update on that. Thought we were okay. Anyway, did get some stuff done today.
Worked on the front axle primarily. Installed the axles and some of the brake components:
Always anal about having the correct marked bolts. I have amassed a pretty decent collection of half-ton and 3/4 ton bolts now:
Also made sure I sealed all the threads that entered a greasy or oil area:
Some good old USGI grease:
We are awash in Carr fire ash around here. Everything is covered in this stuff. Cars are getting pretty bad. I need to wash those tomorrow:
Bearings all ready:
Grease:
F'ed this one up. I think I have installed thousands of grease seals. These ones were like the worst. Finally used a 2x4 which worked great Destroyed two of the seals using the seal installer:
Seals finally in with C clip installed:
Brakes installed:
Now need to figure out my 1945 brake adjustment tool I bought some time ago. Hopefully, it will be something that is useful:

Thanks Ray. Just shot this photo looking west out of my backyard. The fire jumped the line here, and it is burning right at us, but hard to tell how far. Looks to be about 12 to 15 miles out. I can see massive flames with my eye and with the binoculars. This thing has covered a lot of ground. 141,000 acres so far:70th Division wrote: ↑Sat Aug 04, 2018 6:58 pmHello,

Wow !!
That looks massive and close !!!
With everything being so dry, it is a tinder box.
Can they cut any big fire breaks ?
Or is that not even an option with something so big ?
Are they doing air drops of water and chems on it that you can see ?
Stay safe !!

Thanks! Sounds like they were setting backfires last night and today were hitting it with copters and tankers. This thing just won't die. Over 150,000 acres now. News is hard to get regarding the fire specifics unless it's knocking on one's front door.70th Division wrote: ↑Sat Aug 04, 2018 8:07 pmWow !!

Had about an hour in the garage today and dinked around with the brake tool. Figured out how to measure the drum and then transfer the measurements to dial in the brake shoes. Measuring the drum:
Transferring the measurement to the brake shoes:
Then I notice that the shoes were a bit cockeyed and then I remembered that when I took all this apart the shoes were missing the inner spacer that sits below the lower pivot point of the brake shoes:
Part number 13 in this diagram:
Disassembled, came up with some spacers, and installed the spacers. Measured everything. All even now in relation to the backing plate:
Reset the brake shoes with the brake shoe setting kit and the brake shoe setting tool works pretty good. I can just barely slide the drum over the shoes now, so backed off the top of the shoe...toe?..a bit and will adjust when the drum is installed. Ran out of time today.

Hello Zeph,
That is great work there ! Very nice how you got that tool working to do the calibrations !
No one can say that you do not work, and stay cool under fire, with that giant fire in the distance bearing down
Best wishes for that fire to be put out asap !!!

Thanks Ray. Yes, that tool is pretty cool I have had it for a while now, but haven't used it before. It's really ingenuous how it works. Will be using it from now on for setting the brake shoes to the drums.70th Division wrote: ↑Tue Aug 07, 2018 7:40 amHello Zeph,

Fire is still lurking out there. We are stuck in some heavy smoke here. Fairly dangerous to go outside without a mask. Likely be like this for a long time. Funny, saw a guy standing on the side of the road with a mask smoking a cigarette. Didn't have enough time to snap a photo. Would have been a classic!
