Thanks Sean. While I start building the house I can take my free days and finish the job. Last Sunday I drained the fuel system, cleaned the carb and she fired right up. I'll start on the bed again.

On the floors I elected to acid wash and stain, then used a two part, two coat system of epoxy followed by poly aspartic coating. it is nearly bullet proof when fully cured, and cleans up,easily. Oil and gas beads up. Two downsides, it is slick when whet, and I'm not sire how the metal wheels on the engine hoist and stands will do. I will probably upgrade those to a hard rubber caster.

I hate the crud and dust build up of concrete floors and do not like the flakes in paint and gray stuff. Will see how the endure. I need to visit you project thread again.

Oz,

Absolutely love this thread and the truck! I've been reading and gleaning from your thread as I work on my 1/2 ton. I may have missed it, but where did you get the new wood for the bed frame, and how does it attach to the steel frame? Mine was just laying on top unattached, and it didn't seem right at all.

I wish I could afford to help you out and buy your WC... oh what would my wife say????

Thanks much for the support. There should be some images of the bed going on. let me find the post. They bolt onto the frame through existing holes. but I think I need to change a few attachments. look at dave's thread as he did his per original method i believe.

Between packing the excess to get the house on the market, I spent some time on the sub frame and running board support.

Since this was a frame from a different 1/2 ton, one of the running boards was places forward. I removed the rivet and attached the support in the proper place for the WC12.

I secured the two longitudinal beams and the four cross beams with 1/2" galvanized carriage bolts, lock washers, nuts and washers. I then used the 90 degree mounting plates as a template to drill the four holes to attach 5/16" bolts, lock washers and nuts. I also mounted the two tail light brackets and dry fitted the two lights.

I still need to attach the aft lateral support. I was not quite sure on placement, but from what I can tell it goes all the way back, flush with the ends of the longitudinal beams. and centered.

I have a few days before I begin on the home construction, so I'm making some progress on the WC.

I moved the bed pieces out of the way so I could start on the wood bed kit.

I received the oak bed and the metal strips. I laid everything out and dry fitted the bolts. Everything fits well. I removed 6 of the carriage bolts that will pass through the outer oak boards. There is one carriage bolt I am leaving to secure one cross beam through the frame. Since it sits proud of the beam I had to recess the bottom of the two outer boards to allow them to sit, flush and over the head of that carriage bolt.

I cleaned the oils and dirt from the metal strips and primed and painted them along with the strip hardware. I am using No. 14x1.5" wood screws, and in the square slots, I'm using 5/16x1.5" carriage bolts with a lock washer and fender washer. Those do not go,through a cross beam and are just to keep the strips secure on the boards.

I gave the wood two coats of Minwax clear satin polyuerathane stain. No color just like the sub frame.

I also updated the cost page.

Just waiting for everything to dry before I secure the hardware.

Hi Ozzie,
That wood looks beautiful. Keep up the good work. On the bed strips where you use wood screws to attach the strip to the cross-piece stringers, I drilled through the cross piece stringers and attached longer 5/16” carriage bolts. I believe this set up is much stronger than just using wood screws. That is If I am reading what you are talking about correctly.

thanks for the compliment

The metal strips are each manufactured with five countersunk screw holes and two square slots for carriage bolts. Got them from VPW and was "assuming" they are made as the originals, so I used the hardware that matched the holes. I could not find a reference to bed hardware in the TM. Hope I did it correctly.

For sure the through bolts in each hole would be stronger.

I guess that is the way the original beds were attached then. You learn something new everyday as they say.

I could not make that determination. I think someone with an SNL could post images of the bed hardware to confirm that. I,was simply going by how the VPW part was made.

Started on the bed sides today. I decided to add a 1" steel strip to give support to the bolts that secure the front piece right behind the cab. I could not find any details on securing this so here is my solution. I progressed to the right side piece and almost have that done. Have commitments so that's all I could do for today.

I cleaned, painted and installed the two engine cowls. I had to fabricate the front extension piece on the right side at it was missing. I took measurements from the left side and bent it into shape and welded it to the front of the cowl. fits nicely.

I finished the work on the left bed side and will install it soon.. Right side is nearly finished. I'm getting close to finishing. I have interior, hood, doors, window and weatherstripping along with last bits of wiring and lights. Then it's all the details. It has heartening to know how close I was to finishing this. I was losing heart until I actually saw how little was left. I realize the tid-bits will all take time.

Nice work on the splash shield. On the back panel of the pick up box, it did have the clinch nuts along the bottom edge of it right? Are you going to replace the center clinch nut that is missing on the right side of the panel? I believe MWM has them. I also was able to buy some from Mac’s Auto Parts. The WC is really coming together now. Keep at it. You will not regret it. :D

Thanks much. I'd love to replace that missing clinch nut. I had to drill out a rusted bolt and it did nit survive. Thanks, for the lead on where to get those.

My tail gate has quite a,bit of "character" to it with some bullet holes and dents. I was debating getting a new one, but I think I'll just leave it on. I have a handful of hardware things to get to finish up the rear end so to speak.
