EVER NOTICE THIS ON A DODGE?

Post by Ben Dover » Mon Jun 28, 2010 8:27 pm

All "L" Head Dodge engines used in the WC, M-37, PW,etc have a characteristic
exhaust sound at idle.
Dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink,
dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink,
dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink. If yours has a dinka dink, dinka dink mixed in
with the dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dinl, dink, dink,
it probably could use a tune up.

Dinka Dink Dink Dink? Never heard a Dodge sound like that, what causes that noise?
We have a song bird around here that makes that sound, maybe it needs a tune-up

Nothing to it when it is a flathead Dodge six truck engine. There are engines that make signature sounds that engrave their way into one's memory permanently, another is the idling Half Track engine in the movie Tobruk. It has been 43 years, I only saw the movie once and the sound of that one noisy valve is not forgotten. Ron Leatherman now owns that very Halftrack.

Yep, both of mine sound like all of the rest. Those and 4 cylinder Jeeps will cause me to turn my head. :)

It could be if the spring is bad in the heat riser between the int & the exhaust the flap goes back and forth? WALLY

They all have the same signature sound with either type of manifold. It is more noticeable if the muffler is intact.

Huh, now THAT'S an ear worm...

Probably a loose exhaust deflector in the manifold?

I think that's pretty funny in a sense to not only hear a truck make that sound, but to type it out. I have never heard it on a dodge truck, but I am one of the mechanics for our club and will file the likeness of that sound away in my head for further reference. I am sure it will arise someday.

Just a strange sound for an engine to be making, that's all.

Just a reminder.
If your 6 Cyl Dodge WC or M-37 does not have a dink, dink, dink, dink, dink sound to the exhaust, there may be a problem.

I've got two WCs running at the moment but don't recognise the sound you describe Joel though the flat head Dodge six does have a distinctive exhaust note.
However, the GMC 270 and the V8 side valve Cadillac, are in my opinion, music to the ears.
