WC12 Front Brake Cylinder Leaking

Post by 17thAirborne » Wed Jul 04, 2018 4:05 pm

I bled my brakes today and noticed that after driving I have a leak at the RF wheel. It is DOT5 purple fluid, so I took off the wheel, drum and can see that fluid is leaking quite liberally from the front cup of my new after market cylinder. I took the cylinder apart, and the rear cup has a nice suction, but the front cup has quite a bit of side to side movement in the piston and rubber cup. When you pull the rear cup out you can feel the suction, but in the front lots of slop.

Can I assume this is just a crappy part and need to get a new one. I purchased 8 months ago as I was rebuilding and just started using it.

In the event you purchased it new recently I would take it back for a refund and let someone know the issue. I hope no one else has bought this part with this issue, but does not know it yet. 8)

Its a VPW part. I called them and they sent me a new one. Of the four I received, three worked fine. Could have been a bad mold or machining of the cylinder or something. No extra cost, just time. Good company.

Not sure this is a related event, but MY drivers front LEFT started leaking about 3 months ago.

My brake system is also 100% new, installed when I did my restoration going on 2 years now.

One day I noticed bad leaking at the left front wheel. Peddle was down. Master was nearly empty. This was after sitting a few weeks/month.

Still haven't got around to replacing yet.

Just interesting to note as you are experiencing this now, brand new install and all. And others chiming in with same issue, right front cylinder.

One question: after reading this leaking cylinder issue noted in your other tread of the rebuild, you state "for 39 dollars u might buy another"

My question is then do u have 14" drums all around? I ask because the 14" drum cylinders are 39 dollars where as the 11" are 65 or so from VPW.

I have 11" up front, 14" in rear. So the coincidence of the 11" and 14" cylinders leaking may be more of the manufacturers defects, rather than the side or size used.

Anyway...My truck doesn't get a lot of use. It sits a lot more than I want to admit. But who the heck wants to drive in this 100+ plus temps!!

Dave,

I misquoted the price. The 14" are cheaper, but the 11" (which I needed) were $59 I think. VPW just sent me one for free since I had not had it long enough. From the others who commented, it seems there is some sort of "issue" with these cylinders, perhaps. I don't know if its faulty manufacturing, or I'm a bonehead in installing or what. I do know the first install leaked immediately, the second install is fine. Don't know why it would start leaking after a few years.

If you got this from VPW, please call Jens or Steve and let them know. Perhaps they are seeing more problems like this and will upchannel the data to get a change in the fix if possible,
