Why restore it, get it running mechanically and ensure things like brakes and steering are good, hit it with wet / dry sand paper and a pressure washer and leave it like it is, this should not be restored and if I were you I would be doing whatever is needed to keep it.

Its easy to say keep it, unless you like these things and have funds to keep it up, then fine, other than that is is a White elephant.

Jeep does look good, too good actually, until you sit there and look close, you may find an older restoration or something of that sort, who knows, maybe a post war rebuild, then it goes from a actual original ww2 survivor to a post war rebuilt and painted barn find.

"Your jeep is worth $30,000 to $35,000 usd as is! "

if this is true, SELL THIS TO HIM IMMEDIATELY....

What I see:
Multiple paintjobs (even paintover dirt in the wheel wells) hiding crappy body work. Note the holes redrilled in the rear tire area moving the spare tire carrier downward and gas welding the cracked sheet metal.
New wiring harness likley needed, turn signals were put in without regard for original wires, and that whole area might need addressing. Remove and weld up holes where heater was installed.
Missing:
Battery Bracket hold down
Air Cleaner
radiator hoses
Front Seats (edit: one shot had them out and showed a broken off pivot for passenger seat)
Top Bows
Rear tailights
Dash light cover
front grill lights (I gave up memorizing things)
Many more items can be listed if looking at details (door straps and pivots).

I bought a GPW that had "NO Rust" in it when sold...after stripping, it turned out to have 46 holes drilled in various wrong areas and bondo filling in where the 'rust' would have been. MANY hours of gas and stick welding and shrinking metal dents took care of it, that would now equate to $150 per hour at a shop...20-30K in labor...every small part was gone, so that added up a lot of the resto hunt.

So if someone tells you it's worth all that money, have them send you a money order immediatey

It's a nice jeep to put back together, figure it's worth 5-8K as is, then start adding the actual cost up of every part you will need to buy, and every task like welding the rear panel and grinding it down based on "hours" of your time (free) and at laborers hourly time ($75-150 area dependant)

Found a nice Barn Find in similar rust free shape, guy wanted it fixed up for his Dad, I gave him minimum task list (brakes, tires, exhaust, safety, seats and color spray from Silver) esitmate of 3K, and a "restored" cost that exceded $23K about 6 years back, and costs have gone up since then. I don't think he worked on it at all. We will go back and see if he has it, and if unchanged it's still only worth about 3K as a rolling project to begin restoration

IMHO there’s enough of over restored jeeps better than they were new.
This jeep appears all original and solid. And it’s NOT a salad jeep, all components are matching, it gives her an unbeatable taste of authenticity !
Few parts that are missing are easy to find.

I would get it running and leave it as she is.

Would easily sell here in EU for 18/20K

Back to the rear crossmember, it appears to be missing the reinforcement plate behind the post war pintle hook and GPW's have tooling holes and this one does not. I think it is a replacement and is part of the story of it's history.

I hope for the owner's sake the high estimates are coming from people sending pm's trying to buy it.

Cheers,
Peter

The GPW rear crossmember tooling holes are there. Look at the pics showing the rear crossmember from the backside. One tooling hole on each side.

Thanks again for all the info and suggestions. I really do appreciate it.

As much as I hate to say, I have decided to sell the gpw. I could be wrong but I think some estimates of value seem to be high. I know that it will have to be gone through and restored and all that cost $. So I think 15k is a reasonable sale price. Jeep does have clean Colorado title. Wheels in pic are off my cj-6 and not included. It does have 3 combat and 1 reg wheels but tires are shot. If anyone is interested please email me at jeepthing5280@msn.com
Thanks

Did you ever get it started or would it turn freely when hand cranking?
