I recently seen one in Belgium, even the handwritten factory labels were attached. Beautiful.

There come's a time when you gotta use it. My NOS GPW crate engine now has rewarded me with 49 and a half trouble free years with no regrets.

A little Willys history here. The WILLYS "L"-Head (647731),Short Block) was still available from Jeep dealers for just under $500.00 thru the mid 1970's.

I disagree; You Never want to install that engine; it is a rare and desirable collectors item in it's own right; far more rare and maybe more valuable than an entire jeep; once you install it it instantly becomes just another engine and the unique piece of history is forever lost.
Do not install it.

I wonder if the date codes on the generator and dist are in line with the engine, The fram filter with the small bands is good info on there, little off topic, one fram filter sold on the acution site, in a ford box, had wide bands though, I thought wide bands were postwar, so if what is on there came from 45, looks like small bands are correct.

On the picture that shows just the crate writing.

Is the metal round object in the upper right corner covering a vent hole? If so, I would think it would be great at venting and keeping the mice out.

Hopefully, the new owner, or the present owner, would be willing to post a picture of the suspected vent hole?

Are you describing the covered over carburetor inlet?

One of the tags indicates that these engines were run on unleaded gasoline prior to storage.

Yeah if you drop that motor in a Jeep it’s instantly worth 13,000$ less.

I may have found a 134L wood crate engine base as well. Looks very similar to the crate in previous pictures. I bought it 25 years ago with an M38 engine on it (used, now getting rebuilt). I set my old cracked block in it just to show the fit. Looks to be rough cut wood. No markings that i could find. Someone could reverse engineer it and make reproductions. The big hold down "nuts" were brass.

Some great pics of the crated engine can be found here. Very nice.
Thanks to Farrell Fox for recording this stuff.
