Re: Willard Battery Cover
Dear Sir
I will put me at the end of the list!!!
I hope the list not will be so long
I need to purchase 3 Willard battery cover for a willys Slatgrill, Willys CJ2A, Willys Jeepster.
I don’t want anymore the antique auto battery
I need to remade every two year the battery case because this battery is leaking acid...

Re: Willard Battery Cover
Is this for the case with top or just the top? Thanks. Put me on the list if it is for the whole case.

Re: Willard Battery Cover
So I don't have to wade through a lot of pages here, is the consensus that the Willard logos were painted orange on the military applications? Or some? I am not asking what you like, but what shows up in period pictures.

Re: Willard Battery Cover
The original poster used this original battery as his model. I don't know too much about them other than they look cool and hide my Optima 6 volt battery. No one will see mine under my hood but me. Re: Willard Battery Cover
So far on surfaced photos from WWII era, some cases are painted in orange and some are left pain black. Those photos may be found in this thread and also in Farrell's thread. So it is up to a restorer to paint or not to paint. OP may know more if he will decide to chime in.John Neuenburg wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 3:52 pmSo I don't have to wade through a lot of pages here, is the consensus that the Willard logos were painted orange on the military applications? Re: Willard Battery Cover
Don't confuse the ends and back with the front and top.
The front has the WOOD & SW-115 logo along with WILLARD & Standard Duty, this side was painted. The top was also painted.
The ends and back were not painted. That not only appears to be the consensus on this thread but in all the period ads and pictures of batteries installed in the engine bay as well.
The picture of the soldier getting a haircut as well as a worker carrying a battery on the assembly line are both showing the back of the battery.
All three of mine are painted as I described above.
Cheers,
Peter

Re: Willard Battery Cover
On page 6 of this thread there are unpainted examples of the cases.
FUBAR and others decided not to paint.
Here is unpainted survived original case and photo from Ford factory:

Re: Willard Battery Cover
The Ford assembly line picture is the one I referenced, that is the back side of the battery.
As for the 3 pics on p.6 of this thread, only the middle one shows the front and that is not the same style. The others only show the tops and while the caps are clearly painted on one, the others appear to be Autolite so not relevant to a Willard query.
The final point is those pics are GPW's, I have MB's so that is the decisive point for me anytime I make these decisions.
Good conversation but in the end it is up to the owner.
Plan B is the owner can take black and white pictures of his jeep and then it doesn't matter...HA!

Re: Willard Battery Cover
Do you have a picture? Because what is the back of a battery depends on which side you are looking, no?pgcf wrote: ↑Fri Dec 18, 2020 8:47 pmDon't confuse the ends and back with the front and top.

Re: Willard Battery Cover
I just explained the difference in the part you referenced, I don't know how to be any more specific but I'll try.
Look at the letters that are painted in this thread, that is the front (facing towards the engine so that you can read it). The rest remains black.
The orientation of the posts determines the front as it pertains to a jeep.
Good luck,
Peter

Re: Willard Battery Cover
Thanks Peter! Now it is clear for me. Only the side which faces the engine has painted letters/logo's. All other sides (except from the top) are left plain black. Got it!

Re: Willard Battery Cover
No, have not heard from him in some time. I sent him an e-mail a couple months ago as we were working on our Mark II Bomb Trailers, and I was providing some measurements for him. Never heard back. He just went dark.
Just checked his profile, and it shows his last login here on the G503 was November 27th of last year.
Hope all is well with him, but he did seem like a very busy and industrious individual. Perhaps he's just busy on another project.
