True Temper was not a company during WWII, it was a brand, used by the American Fork & Hoe Company, first trademarked in 1929. It became the name of a company in 1949, when American Fork & Hoe changed their name to True Temper. It became a brand again in 1999, when True Temper was bought by Ames, becoming Ames True Temper, and later, The Ames Companies, then just Ames.

I didn't know any of this before the CPA War Supply Contracts books! Not being able to find ay listing for True Temper in the contracts books, when we obviously see so many examples of 'True Temper' shovels, aces, and hammers, led me to do further reading.

All the WWII 'True Temper' marked tools out there were supplied by the American Fork & Hoe Company, to include Kelly Works axes. American Fork & Hoe bought Kelly Axe Mfg Co in 1930. They used the name Kelly Works for a few years, but eventually began incorporating it with the True Temper brand. Those True Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works axes were supplied by the American Fork & Hoe Company, not True Temper (again, not a company), not Ames True Temper (which did not yet exist), and not Kelly Works, which no longer existed.

To prevent confusion, note that WWII tools (shovels, pitons, etc) marked 'Ames' or 'Baldwin' or 'Baldwins' were made by the Ames Baldwin Wyoming Company, which, at that time, was still completely separate from the American Fork & Hoe Company and its brand, True Temper. Ames Baldwin Wyoming Co was formed in 1933 with the merger of the Ames Shovel and Tool Company, the Baldwin Tool Company, and the Wyoming Shovel Works. (Note: this is not a reference to the state, but the Wyoming area of Pennsylvania.)

Ames Baldwin Wyoming of Parkersburg, WV, had multiple contracts with multiple Army agencies for shovels, hand shovels, "intrenching" shovels, and tools. They also got into other things too, including MK2 rocket motors and MK6 projector charges.

American Fork & Hoe, of Wallingford, VT, had multiple contracts with multiple Army agencies for hammers, axes, shovels, and tools.

Jason,
That looks good to me. It's actually "Fairmount". Another variant is Fairmount with made in USA under it.

Thanks Phil. Anyone making a good 'repro' handle? Or should I just hit up the hardware store? :?:

Hi Jason,
I read a lot of hammer threads on the G and haven't seen anyone offering period correct handles. Some have talked about reshaping modern handles but I didn't bother when I rehandled my GMTK Plumb. I looked online for a long time and then went to my local DIY store and found a large selection of handles for half as much as the internet sellers! I'll send a couple pictures of my incorrect Fairmount rehandle. It took a lot of fitting but I understand that's not unusual. According to my carpenter friend the wood shim goes in the slot and the metal shim goes at a right angle to the wood shim. Good luck.

Don,
That looks good! Nice work. You can find old hammer handles at most local flea markets. Many have a vintage look.

If deemed necessary, some reshaping of the handles presently available is possible and not difficult.

Thanks Don, for posting that. Your hammer looks great!
I found a 14" handle at the flea market a couple of weeks ago, but the neck seems to thick. Maybe some sanding can be done as Luca suggested. :?:
Since I'm still without a Jeep... I'm not in too big a hurry to re-handle mine.
I'm contented to let it sit for a time and see if the right handle (and/or Jeep) finds me. :D
Still a long way to go on the Jeep toolkit. I think I have just 7 pieces so far. :(

I don't know if this is a 16oz Farimount hammer or not, but it appears to be mislabeled and looks to have the FTF triangle logo.
Auction ends in 8 hours. Currently at 0 bids...

Were there any Fairmount hammers with the FTF logo found in the repacks? :?:

Jason,
There were not any in Workdawgs repacks. I believe those stamped in that manner are pre-war.

Interesting to note that some FAIRMOUNT hammers have a true BALL peen and some have a more POINTED peen.
Some are marked "FAIRMOUNT", some have a long legged "F" and "T" with "MADE IN USA" between the legs, some are marked "IIFAIRMOUNTII" and some are marked "IIIFAIRMOUNTIII".

Anybody have a picture of a Bond head? None of the old posts in the forum that had a picture have survived.

Here is a photo of my Bond 16oz hammer (NOS), not very detailed I'm afraid. I can post a close-up, but I think it only has "Bond" on one side, with nothing else.

Yes 'MrBill', my Bond is marked in exactly the same way, albeit with a slightly angled stamping ... I even broke it out of my G503 toolbox for you! I may replace it with my 1Ib NOS Heller mentioned previously.
