Generator Set Navy Type CCW 73037 and NOS Tool Set

Post by pjones » Sun Jan 22, 2023 4:02 pm

Some time over the last year while stomping around the flea market trying to score some finds I came across a guy who buys stuff by the trailer load and immediately brings his finds to the flea to flip. He doesn't care what he has or what its worth as long as he sells it for more than what he paid. Well, on this particular load he had some military surplus.

I was able to snag the shipping chest Navy Type CANR-10621 and spare parts box full of spare parts for a Navy Gasoline engine generator set.

Image

Unfortunately for me, the guy next to me scored the gasoline engine generator along with its original and never opened tool set. I'm sure he could see the envy on my face despite my best poker face. Even with years of flea market experience, savvy bargaining techniques and cool demeanor I was desperate to have the NOS tool set and I'm sure he could tell. So when I cooly or so I thought asked if he'd sell the tool set by itself he said he wanted to "keep the set together" i.e. I'm going to research it and stick it to you.

Knowing that he had an original and unopened tool set was driving me crazy. So for weeks I called in every favor I could from every flea market regular I could. Eventually, through the flea market telegraph I was able to connect with the guy and buy the generator and the still unopened tool set.

Very nice! Is that desiccant or glassine paper? We so often see the 1950's repacks where cosmolene was used for long term storage over paper wrapped for more immediate use.

Well done Phil for your perseverance & persistence. Have you still not unwrapped those tools - that hammer looks very cool.
As it's -7C outside, I found myself looking through my old photo-files which included that amazing GMTK-by-year layout of yours together with what looked like your passport photo!
I just love that screwdriver collection in your office!

Matt,
It’s just wax paper over cosmoline coated tools. Photos of the tools to follow.

Hi Cliff!
Are you kidding? It’s all I could do to keep from opening them up while still at the flea market
I remember trying to get that photo. That photo took the better part of a day to complete. While I had sworn off doing another GMTK the box I recently found has convinced me to do one more. I’m actually looking forward to it. I recently retired from one of my two jobs so hopefully I can get caught up on some projects I was helping people with that got put on a back burner due to covid.

Phil, very nice score! I can well appreciate the tension. I’ve had a few of those near “hit” moments and I just chalk it up to fate and the old… “man I should have gotten there a few moments earlier.” By the way… is it a WWII dated generator and tool set or is it post war?

Thank you,
Henry

Hi Henry. The Tool roll is not dated. I’m not a generator guy but I haven’t found a date on it either though maybe a generator guy can tell me exactly where to look. It is not on the data plates. The spare parts are dated anywhere from 1945 to 1951. So I’m assuming its a late war or early post war set.

Here are some photos of the hammer. As you can see it is manufactured by Fairmount. It is 4 ounces and there is nothing stamped on the other side of the head. Somewhere buried here on the gee I've seen photos of a NOS Fairmount hammer that look just like this one. If I were assembling a NOS onboard tool kit this is how I would want my hammer to look.

There were 3 DOE wrenches in the Tool Set.

Fairmount 725A. Typical sharps version we have seen before.

Fairmount 723. I'll have to be honest, if someone had asked if this style Fairmount DOE was the correct style Fairmount for a ww2 tool set I'd have said it was incorrect.

The set included a really well made pair of slip joint pliers. Maybe some of the tool brand experts can comment but I wonder if this is Forged Steel Products purchased by Snap On in 1945.

Thanks Don. There's not much out there about Vulcan Manufacturing Co. Apparently they were more well known for manufacturing car jacks.

The generator nomenclature tag should have a Phila.-XX on it where the XX is the year of manuf. So Phila-44 is from 1944 etc. The Phila for Philadelphia. That will confirm the era of the genny. The box may also have a tag.

Great find to confirm original tools. Well done sir
