Post by gpw_42 » Thu Dec 01, 2022 12:41 pm

Yesterday I obtained temporary access to the following documents. My comments here will focus on the SNL G-175; if you see a listing which you want more information about, let me know ASAP and I’ll see if I can get pictures of that SNL. This is a partial listing of SNLs, but for documents which are new to me.

Here is why the SNLs are not available for scanning: to separate them for flattening would likely tear them apart, and that's not an option. The khaki web straps which hold together this 2-inch thick binder appear to be riveted in place. The risk of destruction doesn't outweigh the benefit of cell phone photography....

Fascinating sort of binder. Looks like it's adjustable in the thickness of how many pages are in it. Appears that the tension bar the webbing is fixed to starts out loose and all the pages are inserted, then it is tensioned into place along that cog. From your one picture it appears to be a one time deal too. That once it was tensioned it stays. But maybe there is a release point under the metal that can be reached with a slender screwdriver. Neat stuff all the same!

Matt

Edit to say that I see it now. Just below the toothed bar or cog are three rivets and a little tab. I bet when it was assembled that could be released to expand or contract the binder size. They look rusted and seized up now. I would be real hesitant to try. Any penetrating oil could leak into the cardboard of the binder or onto the pages.

That looks to be great resource, hopefully you will be able to copy it's contents :?:

I assume that the file is designed to expand when new pages need to be inserted, or when old pages need to be removed ?

So there must be an easy means of releasing the tension in those bands to enable that to happen ?

Is that a release tab on the LHS indicated by my single arrow ? I assume that tension is reapplied by sliding both ' finger pulls ' to the left as indicated by my two arrows ?

Hope this helps :?:

The point of the initial post was to determine if anyone wants pics of any other SNLs besides the G-175. I will likely lose access to the book of SNLs sooner than later.

Matt and Len are both (apparently) correct about how to disassemble the book. The point of Len’s single arrow is certainly here the disassembly would start. Since it’s not my book, and the owner doesn’t want to risk being unable to reassemble it, I did the best I could and took cell phone photos of the entire thing, something approaching (IIRC) 150 photos.

I’m about 1500 miles from the digital photos, so it’ll be a bit before I can spend the time to shrink the photos, then upload them here. I have no current plans to do that for the entire document, and may only do a section of the RAPD photos (approximately 50 or so in the manual).

Perhaps by the new year I’ll be able to get the RAPD pics posted. But again, if anyone is interested in any of those other SNLs, I need to know ASAP after you find this message.

While I greatly appreciate what you are doing and the lengths you are going to document and preserve history. It is not something I am directly looking for. I read through you post to see if I wanted any of those tool list and none appealed to my collecting desires. I hope someone who is looking for that information speaks up as you've gone above and beyond and it would be nice to see your efforts appreciated.

Here's a list of the vehicles, by SNL, to which these tools apply.

G-99 M5 Tractor Crane, 2 ton and Light Tractor, International Harvester TD9
G-101 M1 Heavy Tractor, International Harvester Model TD 18
G-102 Halftracks built by White Motor Co., Autocar, and Diamond T
G-103 M3, M5 and M5A1 Light Tanks
G-104 M4-series Sherman tanks
G121 M6 gun Motor Carriage (WC-55)
G-124 Light Tractor (Caterpiller D2)

G-127 M8 Howitzer Gun Motor Carriage (75mm)

Note that not all tools apply to all vehicles. Further, some tools were not issued for use on specific vehicles, and not all tools in the set were pictured in the RA PD figures above. The green circles on this page of the text illustrate both of those points:
