GMTK Box

Post by 43GPW98036 » Mon Feb 22, 2021 5:51 pm

I have this GMTK Box that is only 15” wide, 6” less than than the standard boxes (21”).

Anyone else has a similar box? I think this one is GI, has original OD paint and no signs it was modified from the regular ones.

Also, I found this in a flea market in the area of Coffeyville, KS where there used to be an Army Air Field in WW2 (1942-1946).

In its previous life, someone had brazed, not welded, a padlock latch on it which I removed.

Yup. I have one. And, like yours, mine came out of a flea market equidistant from two military bases, Lakehurst Navy Air Engineering Station and Ft Dix.

Interesting, Len. I wonder if someone spot-welded that little index card holder on the side. Mine doesn't have that, and if GPW43's does, I think he would've mentioned it.

That one doesn't look small to me, Cliff. At least not as small as GPW43's, mine, or the one Len linked.

//// BREAK ////

I think it's possible these smaller boxes could be the Type IV (41-B-1835-400, no tray, and -450, with tray) boxes in Figure 5, page 26, in the July 1944 ORD 5 SNL J-15. They look visibly smaller (not shorter, smaller, more specifically narrower, like those boxes posted by GPW43 and me and the Len linked eBay ad above) to me than the Type I and Type II boxes on the same page. The Type I and Type II boxes (41-B-1833 and 41-B-1835, respectively) look like the same size as GMTK boxes. There is no scale provided on that RAPD figure, and Page 10 in the SNL section does not provide any dimensions for the Type I, II, or IV boxes shown in that RAPD figure, unfortunately. The 41-B-1840 (GMTK box) on page 10 is not given a Type designation, but the SNL indicates that it is shown in Figure 5, implying that it's Type II. It can't be Type I, which has compartments in the bottom. Either way, it implies that Type II and Type I, which are the same size, are the same size as the GMTK box.

What we need is a separate reference for the Type IV (41-B-1835-400, no tray, and -450, with tray) boxes that include dimensions.
