2021 Tool Hunting

Post by gpw_42 » Wed Feb 10, 2021 3:06 pm

Picked up these (mostly) WW2 era tools at an estate sale on Friday. The Walden 3132 6" flex extension may be post-war, as it doesn't show in any of the wartime catalog scans which Don has posted.

Plvmb WF-103 1/2" obstruction wrench
Vlchek 27C DOE
Walden 1/4" dr. 6pt, 1/4" socket
Williams 8033 7/8 x 31/32. NOT GMTK correct, but spot-on for the era, and I wasn't going to pass it by.

I no longer get paid to stand in line in cold rain or freezing temps, so it'll take something REALLY tempting to draw me out for that. Sorta wish I'd gotten there earlier in the day, but it didn't appear likely to be worth all that.

Have also been collecting a BUNCH of PS Magazines from the auction site. Hopefully able to post a picture of that shortly.

Found multiple auctions on the auction site for different PS Magazines, and have enjoyed picking them up. One seller found me, after I'd looked at a bunch of their auctions, and made me a smoking deal if I'd buy them all. Picked up some dupes, but I got about half of the post-2000 issues in one fell swoop. Somewhere around here, there's a picture with several stacks of the PSs with a beer bottle for reference on the height of the stacks, but I can't find the pic. So here's my shelf, before and after, with a few detail photos, as well:

Oh man! I just realized how far behind I am on updating this thread.

First up, today's haul, which was unusually good:

WW2 Donkey D*ck (fuel can nozzle)
Walden 9/32" 6 point socket, BlOx finish.
Combination tool, BAR, Cal .30
NOS(?) fabric belt for .30 machine gun - metal tab still present
210423_WW2 Donkey D.jpg
210423_Combo tl and Walden 3109.jpg
210423_Combo tool and Belt.jpg
A different day's haul:
Plvmb WF-103 1/2 obstruction wrench
Vlchek 27C (Dodge)
Walden 3108 1/4" socket, 1/4" dr.
Williams 8033 (not GMTK correct, but era-correct)
Williams 8033, WF-103, Vlchek 27C, Walden 3108.jpg

Series of auction site purchases:

Walden 1131 DLB
Husky 9/16" socket, 1/2" dr. to make up a shortage in my first GMTK
Sharpening stone, which will stand-in for a 3"x2"x3/8"x1/16". Note how it's thicker one one side in the pic with the donkey D, in the previous post.

Not pictured: SnapOn 1942 A26 DLB, which I found in my garage.

More catching up on "stuff."

G-series Duro 2042 SDBE and a Barcalo LDBE - I think 15/16" x 1", to make up for the Duro 2016 which will be a long-term hunt.

The Blue Point CF-12 valve spring compressor came from the auction site, and is most likely 1938 vintage, which puts it a little pre-war. That's OK, b/c I bought it for a user. Go figure the next weekend, the (cad?) plated KD came from the flea.

Mossberg ell wrench and P.T. CO. offset screwdriver.

Thanks to Don for giving me the shoutout on the ink stamped long Irwin, which came from the auction site.

Nice saves! I think we're both thinking alike on the LDBE wrench, at least the longest one. I have the two shorter ones matching, a Duro 2014A (X) and a Duro 2015A (X), but in reading around here it seems some feel the 2016 is a bit too long and out-of-spec to be in the tool kit. I haven't lucked out and seen a 2016A anyways yet, so for now a VLCHEK 15/16x1" wrench will be in that spot in the kit.

Thanks! It's nice to have something to post up, but I've been slacking, and am now trying to "get right."

You're probably right about the Duro 2016 being too long for the spec, but my OCD traits sure want me to have a complete set of the Duro (X) wrenches in this thing, when all is said and done. Like your thought process on the Vlchek alternative - Uncle Sam sure didn't care what maker/series they were back in the day :) My Barcalo is kinda boring around here, but it was cheap, and no shipping, so??? It took me about 3 years to find a Williams 4019B for my MVMTS; as a friend likes to remind me, "they made more than one of those."

You're finding some great stuff. But you downplayed the find of the double offset driver! I've only found one in the wild despite years of searching. Very cool.

It helps to not advertise the dross :) I appreciate it, though. Sure beats the Craftsman post-war 1/4" drive box I initially put in my MVMTS.

Not sure yet if that PT Co. offset is WW2; it seems to be, and other than having a hex shank, meets the spec (specs: 8.5" long, 3/8" bits, octagon shank, bits orientation not specified, other than offset in both directions from the shank). Last pic to show the paint chipping off the shank. See this thread: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=247061 A little looking for who PT Co. was (is?) has been fruitless, so far. This is new water for me - so far I've learned to parrot a portion of what you "old hands" have figured out.

I did find www.performancetool.com, which initially seemed to be a natural fit. Of course, that was too good to be true, as it looks like they make the cheapo blister pack stuff that's in every auto parts store in the US. Not sure if they've changed their business model, or if that's a dead end.

Oh, and Mud, I found a 10-68 Coleman 502 the other day, which fired up with the fuel that was in it! <$10 got the stove, a Coleman No. 0 filter funnel and a copper funnel with no markings., but no photos here since it's not WW2.

The driver is a gem. Sure looks period correct to me.
You should cross post your images to the offset driver thread linked HERE.

Nice find on the stove. I've been on the hunt for a #500 for a while now. I can't afford eBay prices.
It's always nice when they fire up with the fuel that came in them!

Picked up these in a semi-local antique/junk shop the other day:

Series of (mostly) Duro tools, from a Facebook transaction. We did a little trading, and it came out well for both of us.
Drive tools Overview.JPG
Pair of 1-1/8" deeps (one Duro/Chrome, the other -D- I-), and a -D-I- 15/16" deep.
000_0666.JPG
000_0667.JPG
The chromed wrench is a Craftsman, long C. Duro-Chrome G1025. (X) 1033-C with tape around the end. Carbon scraper is unmarked, with a Stanley 1/4" punch, in cosmoline.
Wrenches Overview.JPG
3/8" dr. Duro & SnapOn tools. The two cad ones on the lower right are both 5/16" SnapOn G-code. My Ferret set is getting close!
000_0671.JPG
The 41-B-307 FSN marked 1/2" dr. extension is Mossberg, <M>, the others are unmarked. I plan to NOT remove the NOS ones from their wrapping.

Thanks, Don.

Won't be long before I'm hunting a Duro box for the deep sockets :)

Received this incomplete lot of WW2 mechanics training course materials over the weekend, which I’m still figuring out.
000_0700.JPG
The material was divided up into several courses; what I have is really about HOW to plan and deliver the training, not the training itself. I have most of the training outlines (training and evaluation outlines, if that means anything to you) for courses 4-6, but none of these includes the details of the information covered (details are in either the tech manual or Army Motor Maintenance texts; TM or AMM). All the Instructors’ Guides I have are dated July 1, 1942 and cover the same information:
Daily Schedule of Instruction
Subject
Objective
References
Tools & Parts needed (arranged by FSN)
Topics to cover by instruction period; 4 instruction periods per day
1st Period: Introduction, or conference and quiz on preceding day’s work
2nd Period: Discussion of current day’s work.
3rd Period: Shop Operations
4th Period: Summary of day’s work and assignments

Assignment Sheets (homework with TM or AMM references and questions)
Quiz Sheet(s) to be used the next day

This is an interesting view of the other side of the training prepared by the QM branch at Camp Holabird, early in the war. It is somewhat the alternative view provided by Wingnutt’s master mechanic (student) file described here: viewtopic.php?f=144&t=313347&p=1822773& ... c#p1822773 However, there’s nothing personalized in my stuff, like there is in his. An important part (at least to me) of the material I have is geared toward training management – how to train hundreds of soldiers in a short time.
