Tool kit loadout for Simonsen cantilever tool box

Post by maddawg308 » Sat Jul 06, 2019 4:52 am

I recently purchased a well-worn Simonsen type toolbox, labeled "Box, Tool, Mechanics, Type II, Class A, Size 2". Looks to be 1950s or early 1960s manufacture by the markings on the data plate, i.e. contract number, etc. Looking through the G503 forums, I've found lots of data on the boxes, their features and design, and when they were likely manufactured depending on those features. However, I can't definitively find any info on what specific tool kit loadout would have been issued with these boxes. Like the GMTK toolboxes, I'm sure the loadout changed over time, in other words the tools issued in type and number as time went on. I'm sure the same goes for these boxes.

Long story short, does anyone know the nomenclature of the tool kit that went into these cantilever tool boxes, and have a packing list of what was in them? Thanks,

Think if I were trying to find the answer to this, I'd start with the USAF aircraft maintenance (mx in Air Force parlance) tool kits of the era, in an effort to determine if the kit specifies the box (the box would have likely been a specified component of the kit). Don't know if there were aircraft-specific kits, or General Aircraft Maintenance Tool Kit...or maybe both?

Interesting question, and I'll look forward to any info which comes to light! I also have one of these boxes, which was too nice to pass up for its price. They're large and practical (full of tools, perhaps too heavy to be practical, unless you're 22....) with numerous compartments.

Good luck, and please keep us posted on what you find.

Based on USAF tool boxes from 1983-2005 the tool box contents differed by base, airframe, AFSC ( engine mech, hydro mech, electrician etc), and any specialty job, tire change kits, engine change kits, rigging kits, etc

basic kits broken down by AFSC were all the same on base X... all the crew chief boxes were identical in load out, their weight and size were identical. This was for weight and balance when shipping...same goes with other AFSCs and their boxes at base X...A crew chief box at base Z, with the same airframe as base X might have the same basic contents with minor local preferences...

all tool boxes no matter what base would have an inventory list, and the tools shadowed to account for each tool upon check out and turn in.

I have looked at a few USAF tool boxes from the 1960s, there was no shadowing, just a bunch of tools thrown in box...not saying this was standard practice..posting on the crew chief FB page might get some enthusiastic responses

Fixer, would appreciate any insight you can gain from that. I tried to get access to the crew chief groups w/o success - they're not interested in comments from non-USAF folks (and seem to show a strong preference for maintainer types). Their page, their rules.

Thanks for the idea, though!
