Vise Grip

I picked up a pair of well used Vise Grip pliers at a flea market to use in my shop. These are the old style Peterson Mfg. Co. pliers with out the unlocking lever. When I cleaned them up I noticed a little O. D. paint on them as well as a patent date of Apr. 14 1942. My question for you tool guys is did the military ever use these and if so do you have any idea when? I would appreciate any information.

I don't know what tool-sets or kit they were used in, but if I am correct in my interpretation, a 7- and 10-inch version of the Petersen Vise-Grips were given Federal Stock Numbers 41-W-458 and -460 in the ORD 5 catalog. It's a funny story. See my post from 2015 linked here.

Wingnutt,
Thanks for your reply. Those Petersen's and son's will trip a guy up all the time! With the information you and Jeff posted it sure answered my question and more. My pliers are stamped no.10, and they measure about 10 in. As I have been on this forum for several years, although I don't post much I do read the postings often, including the tool section, so I thought this would be the place to ask and I was not disappointed. As for the pliers I'll probably keep using them or throw them in my Dodge tool kit.

Just ran across this post, this is a pair a friend has with the hard to find decal still remaining. The flash made this pair look more worn than it was, it had the appearance of having been stored away for decades (didn't examine them too long, but still had the 1942 patent on the handle) but hardly used.

Not often you see the decal still on these! Without the decal they are not hard to find, but when you are looking for a pair with the decal, it gets significantly harder. Thought some here might appreciate a photo of them.

Great example!

My understanding is that the decal was earliest, being replaced at some point by the rollstamp. That might account for the decals being harder to find, or it could be that people just used them enough the decal came off. They are very handy!
