4528 underline C pliers turned up today. Not part of the DeLuxe Kit but I don't think anyone will notice

Here are the results of the exterior respray. I waited until the day warmed up and sprayed it in direct sunlight.d42jeep wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 10:10 pmSince we were speaking of preserving the original decals, I found this partial BE set on eBay and decided to try to redo the interior while saving the decal. I’m pretty happy with how it came out. The exterior needs sanding down and I will let the interior finish drying overnight and paint the outside tomorrow.

Re: Craftsman Deluxe Toolbox, a new home for the BE tools
That looks just fine Don.
I was measuring up original Craftsman decals this morning, and noticed that the 1/4" 12 piece 4406 set has a decal about 1 1/8" long, but the more extensive 1/4" 16 piece 4368 set has a decal about 1 3/8" long. It's difficult to be exact because the original edges are worn, but the larger box has a larger decal.

Re: Craftsman Deluxe Toolbox, a new home for the BE tools
I bought some cans of dark blue paint to try to match the residual paint on the small box. I selected the one on the right and sprayed over the black wrinkle on the large BE box. I was nervous about the color but fortunately the paint dried much darker than it went on. It is a hard color to photograph even using flash. The good thing about the vinyl decals is that they are easy to remove when something better comes along, such as a water transfer decal. I’m still waiting for them to arrive.

Since Gordon let me know that my BE set was in too small of a box, I’ve been working on a larger box for the set. The decal is incorrect but I suppose it’s better than nothing.

Looks fine to me Don.
Going back over my decal applications I noted just how approximate the factory was. As long as the sign was on there the orientation didn't seem that important. I'm sure they were similarly careful with sizes.

They were definitely pretty casual about where the decals ended up. I put a few BE tools into the smaller box.

It's almost like you can tell which of the decal-fitters were right or left handed.

Re: Craftsman Deluxe Toolbox, a new home for the BE tools
Managed to pick up a DANIELSON 8" adjustable as a placeholder,
followed a day or two later by a CRAFTSMAN VANADIUM one.
I've been looking for a good while, and the only early ones I've seen of any size have all been branded CRAFTSMAN VANADIUM. The plain CRAFTSMAN one is in the catalogue but I've only ever seen it as a drawing - anyone have a plain CRAFTSMAN branded one made by Danielson?

Re: Craftsman Deluxe Toolbox, a new home for the BE tools
I not only don’t have one, I’ve never seen one other than in the catalogs. I’ve always been surprised that Danielson would make an adjustable wrench for Sears that is such a departure in the jaw area from what they were producing for themselves. I do have an early Danielson made Dunlap branded adjustable that has the commonly seen Bet’r-grip jaw design but it is likely pre metal restrictions since it’s marked Vanadium on the opposite side.

Thanks Don. I think I'm calling it then. The one illustrated in the '42 catalogue doesn't exist, ( at least until someone posts an image of a genuine one here in about five minutes )
I take it the CRAFTSMAN VANADIUM is the one showing in the earlier catalogue? Apologies if you have already said so.

Here is an image from the 1939 catalog showing basically the same wrenches.

Thanks Don.
So either they didn't make many, or they all broke. It has to be more than a co-incidence that all the Danielson-made Craftsman branded adjustable we have seen from that era all have the VANADIUM marking. We should probably expect the vanadium marking 39-41, and 42-45 to be plain, is that right?

I would assume so, like the Danielson versions from that era. There have to be some Craftsman ones out there somewhere.

Re: Craftsman Deluxe Toolbox, a new home for the BE tools
I’m making some progress on the smaller BE 1/4” drive sets. I ordered another partial set with a large box (featuring an upside down latch). I cleaned the sockets from that set and added them to the small boxes. I’ve ordered the missing sockets so I’m just missing a crossbar. I started applying the wrinkle base to the new box.
