Making progress there Don. I'm not really doing anything except trawling through the auction site for the missing DeLuxe bits, the only socket equipment I'm short of for that is the two universal swivels - all the more annoying that I have a full set of the universal sockets which aren't supposed to be in the set.

I’ve finally gathered the sockets for the small BE sets.

Thanks, Gordon. It’s interesting that the illustrations in the catalog show more 12 point sockets but the lists show a mix of 6 and 12 points along with the 8 points.

The old chestnut of re-using illustrations, do you think?

I think so. In the 1939 catalog they were all 12 point. I wonder what year they transitioned to all 6 point. It was sometime between ‘42 and ‘48. I need access to a interim catalog because by ‘48 the socket style had changed, probably to Moore Drop Forge.

Len has been helping me again, pointing me at auctions I may otherwise have missed, and filling up gaps in the kit.

Two of the three hammers are contemporary Craftsman, I think the middle one looks right but has no visible markings.
ham.jpg
I already had an amber handled hacksaw, but one of the handle halves was toast, this one is a lot better.
s-l1600.jpg
I have found a few bits on my own.
A 3/8" BE Universal Swivel, still hunting for the 1/2" version.

... and finally
1516.jpg
BE 15/16" Drag Link Bit
1816.jpg
BE 1 3/16" Drag Link Bit

Still got to find a good 1/2" Drag Link Bit. There is one on that auction site but it is very second hand. I have a couple of the longer, rarer BE Extensions in the post to me so making good progress.

Gordon, nice additions to the box!

It's amazing how far you've come in about a year. Do you by chance have an "overview" picture(s) of the set? Or a catalog shot modified to show what's still missing (or present)?

That's an idea Steve, but those overview images are really difficult, the catalog shots look like forced perspective drawings and difficult to stage. Of course I now have a pile of extra contemporary equipment that wasn't originally in there, like deep sockets, spark plug sockets, wobble sockets and drag link bits, plus some of the longer socket extensions.

I might get to it, but for now, still missing from the original DeLuxe Kit:

Universal Joint 1/2"
Screwdrivers, three off, 4 1/2", 6", 8"
Pry Bar, 16"
Punch, Lining Up, 1/2" x 9"
Cold Chisel, 3/4"
Pin Punches, two off, 1/8" and 3/32"

... so about nine pieces missing to date.

Guys, perhaps this will help in your request for an interim catalog. 1942 Craftsman catalog.

Don,

I wondered where you got your images in your post “up” thread. Anyway, if anything isn’t clear from that source let me know as I have an original (from which I posted my images).

Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and Happy New Year to all!

Thank you,
Henry

pry.jpg
Pry / Alignment bar duly added to the set. Like the adjustable it is underline Craftsman Vanadium as it doesn't seem to exist as a plain underline Craftsman marking.

Still short of:

Universal Joint 1/2". ( New Britain placeholder )
Screwdrivers, three off, 4 1/2", 6", 8"
Punch, Lining Up, 1/2" x 9"
Cold Chisel, 3/4"
Pin Punches, two off, 1/8" and 3/32"

It’s coming along well. Those period screwdrivers are very difficult to find. I’ve run across a few BE tools recently and my neighbor brought me this 3/8” drive ratchet that he found at an estate sale.
