M-1944 Goggles

Post by YLG80 » Thu Jun 06, 2019 10:57 am

This is what I've found today in a flea market in Switzerland, in the military area.
Usually there is only Swiss stuff, but this time there was a US accessory.
The M-1944 googles are in the original box with 2 spare lenses :one red and one clear.
The rubber is black and marked 1945 on one side and the other side USN.
Price was 25CHF
I guess that this box can take place in my 1943 GPW glove box :D

Yes it was surprising. Most of the time they are marked US.

I bought the goggles thanks to your post in 2007 :D

BTW, can you identify these goggles.
The guy is the very first GI who arrived here in 1944, where I'm actually living . (Jeep 1A 759 Light Tank like mine :)!)

M1943 wind and dust goggles. They came in a variety of lens colors; clear, green, red, and smoke.

I think the goggles in the second picture are the gas shield goggles. The M1943s have a leather frame.

I believe the cigarette GI is wearing aviator goggles with the separate frame cushions (unlike the one-piece cushion AN6530 etc.). The vent on the top of the frame says "aviator" vs. a vent-less German Army goggle. The link design between the frames would tell the tale (but we can't see it in this pic).

The officer's celluloid goggles could be US or Brit. In North Africa Rommel had a few famous pics taken wearing those. His were most certainly Brit as those photos pre-dated our arrival.

I agree, I think they are either US Eyeshield M1 or British Eyeshield MKII. I am fairly sure Rommel was wearing the British MKI which had a more defined edge to them.
