1918 Tool Kits (for comparison)

Post by W. Winget » Wed Feb 27, 2019 10:42 am

I know it's G503...but you come across tools without knowing some of them are from WWI, so here's some neat photos of tools off the National Archives collection I came across while hunting for my 1918 Standard B "Liberty" truck information. And just because their labels state they went to a certain vehicle does not mean they were exclusive to, or even ended up in that vehicle as the War ended about the time these were made and contracts changed quickly.
There are other "sets" and the originals of these are typically 20MB each.
Last comment: If you come across a few of these that do not interest you....I have a 1918 Standard B that would love a few....or find them a good home.

Nice to know that all the toolkits were manufactured by Vlchek. I might have a few of those older Vlchek DOEs somewhere.

Wow. Just wow. Those images are works of fine art compared to the WWII figures. Thanks for posting W. Winget.

I would not narrow it down to "All' tool kits, there are others, it just means the NARA files I found which were marked for "Liberty","Standard B", "Truck", Tool Kit, etc. popped up. They may not have even taken a photo of some tool kits, and there are other manufacturers like Walker, whom I saw photos of the factory making Jacks, and finally tied them together as a Walker #55 after delving into a 1919 Standard B parts pub. That photo led to me locating a Walker #55 5T jack on Etsy and purchase.
Oddly the photos above do not jive with the published manuals (parts and operators pubs) for the Standard B trucks either, they list other tools, and when seen in maintenance photos, i see a large Dog Bone wrench not listed in the operator manual but the parts pub which may have been one wrench per 5 trucks or such issue, no photos in factory layouts (so far).

They really did not have their act together as far as tracking things into publications during WWI. I suffer from ZERO mechanical guidance for disassembly of the truck, I think mechanics were trained in systems functional operation, not individual specs to single vehicles. Main and piston bearings were assembled with a torque level of "feel' using a 6" sliding "T" bar with extension for example. that's just how they did it then.
I'll try to add some BII excerpts down the line.

PS: Robin: really neat old wrench with the markings :D Have to wonder why that particular "Monkey Wrench" was used VS the other style (kept through WWII issue) they were obviously producing in the same company.

A few more shots, plenty out there of tool sets, the high res pics on some of those others offer hammer labels like vilcehk "test the best" or "best in tests" edge logos.

PS Anyone want to make a WWI #1 mechanics tool chest?

This ordnance marked ratchet most likely belongs in a weapons tool kit since it's not QMC marked.

Wingnut,

I had a WW I tool box that was sold in my collection downsize, but I know where it is and I think it is available. PM and I can get you the contact.

It is similar to the illustration in your post. But it is steel construction. The front face is hinged at the bottom and drops down with chains at the sides.. Traces of WW I camo pattern paint on the top and sides. Definitely WW I.

Cheers

My most humble apologizes for misspelling Mr. Winget's name in the post.

No execute for that sir.

But it was shop class or typing class and I could only take one, so you understand the shortcoming of my typing skills.

Thanks

Their is a striking resemblance between the WW1 mechanics tool chest and a Signal corps mechanics Chest BG-77 as shown in Chads Signal corps photo from 1943.
