Very nice Robin, with that marking nobody can argue what it is.
Probably a different manufacturer to the illustration because of the nozzle retainer.

Roger,
Right you are. The filler in the RAPD photo is a Huffman brand. Which is solidly based on exactly the feature you pointed out which is the spout retainer. Also, the exact means of engaging and disengaging the stopper which can be seen at the top of the can is also a feature specific to Huffman. Both were part of the patent(s) for this measure.
Thank you,
Henry

One other interesting tid bit in the RAPD photo is that the caption underneath the filler which is clearly the 2 gallon filler is 41-W-941 which is the FSN for the 2 QUART filler which looks distinctly different from the 2 GALLON filler.
Thank you,
Henry

Re: 41-M-942 2 gallon oil can
In the listing it refers to a 1 quart(41-m-940), 2 quart (41-m-941) and 8 quart (41-m-942) but it only says that the 1 quart and 2 quart are illustrated which they have got wrong as you say.
Fancy that, a mistake in an official document
