I left this Bonney behind, but snapped a pic. It's got a 1944 code, the wartime style, natural steel finish, and looks for all the world like it should be a 1033C. But it's got an odd number on it: 1037D. I haven't tried to look it up anywhere yet.

We'll need you to turn in your Bonney Appreciation Card at the next scheduled meeting.

Found a bunch of wartime Cornwell at the flea this morning, all cad, including some 1/2-inch drive deep sockets, swivels, a drag link bit, and some 3/8-inch drive. What I really need is a Cornwell box! The collection has outgrown the tote I started them off in!


And this WWI Sturgis & Burns bacon can is from Friday. A friend of mine found one last year with a very early 1920's Herbrand socket set inside of it. I wasn't so lucky. Just nuts and bolts. But I may re-purpose it for a Bay State set I have.

Funny you should say that. I tried to buy just the top box from the old timer that was selling it. He refused to split the stack up. I just didn't think the bottom would fit in the Wife's Honda. After taking a few things apart, we made it fit. I'm happy to have them both, that's for sure.

I don't take the Honda picking anymore.

Oooh, what year is yours? I have an 80's one with an Cage Code DRMO sticker on it painted gray. I thought about repainting it to OD to use for WW2. But only if I can support it's use then.

Unfortunately, the data plate on the front is missing. But the TM is dated July 1944, it cites the same OEM name that is on the unit itself (Supreme Instruments) in the supplemental parts list, leading me to deduce that they were matched up, and there is a de-moisture/de-fungus tag on the back stamped "JAN. 1945". Based on all that, and my experience with other Signal Corps sets, markings, and processes, my conclusion is that this unit was made in late 1944. That de-moisture/de-fungo plate is typically the LAST thing they stamp.

I should've added that I found Supreme Instruments in the WWII contracts books, and they had a contract with the Signal Corps to produce I-176 test units from 5/44 to 10/44. Provenance doesn't get much better than that! Again, see my other thread. I included an excerpt of that, too.

Wingnutt, my mistake. I have a different tester:

The earliest manual I found for mine was dated October 1 1945. Found it on Radio Nerds. So I suspect the TS-183/U is postwar only. Oh well. Not the same thing. I can delete these after a day or two. Just wanted to show you. Don't want to clutter up your thread.

That's a pretty cool looking set, even if it is later. As you said it traces it's lineage back to the WWII era. Please consider starting a new thread on it if you do choose to delete it from this one. A quick check brought up this info on the TS-183:


Battery Tester TS-183/U Spec. 71-3149 circa 1946.

TM 11-2571 Battery tester TS-183/U listed as dated 1 October, 1945 but with a GPO printing date of 1946.

MIL-T-12756(SigC) Test Set, Battery (Battery Tester TS-183( )/U) Superceded 71-3149 as of 22 May, 1953.

Note the empty parenthesis in the designation of the 1953 spec. I suspect they were preparing to issue an 'A' (to your 'B') suffix to the set designation, but that's a guess on my part.

Season is winding down as the cold sets in, which is when I like my flea markets the best. Only the hardcore sellers and buyers come out. I can park close, move quickly, and be out of there in a matter of 20 minutes.

Slim pickins though.

10" flat smooth file (K&F), 1943 dated Wright socket in a hard to find size (1-1/16") and a postwar JP Danielson-made 4" adjustable crescent type wrench (Proto).

I just cleaned up this flea market haul from last Thursday.


Those Fairmount sharps are a 731-A and a 27-C. After I found those and I went back through the rest of the lot - dumped out in messes on five folding tables! - with a fine tooth comb, but no dice on any other Jeep/GMTK DOE wrenches.

The DBE's are the smallest GMTK spec long pattern with 15* angle ends and 11/16" x 3/4" openings (41-W-603) - a Bonney Bonaloy 2893C, and the biggest GMTK spec dwarfie pattern with double offsets and 5/8" x 3/4" openings (41-W-625) - a Barcalo-Buffalo (up by the blue Billings socket set box).

The -ZENEL- would be a ho-hum "BU" (1943) if not for the additional "PWA 1114" stamp on the flip side shank.
