Harley WLA Tools in use.

Post by matt506 » Fri Jun 22, 2018 6:34 pm

I thought that while I list second echelon tools I would start a thread on how these tools were used as pictured in the manuals. I will in the future recreated pictures to clarify if it is not clear, and please by all means add any pictures that you may have. I am torn weather this should be in the tools section or in the motorcycle/bicycle section so I may duplicate this thread. Enjoy, Matt

First picture is this massive open end wrench. This tool is used on the manifold nuts. The open end is 1 7/8 big. Note the slight bend in the wrench to clear oil tank and get more turning radius clearance.

Now here is a simple tool both in the late war tool kit and second echelon tool kit. The head bolt socket wrench. A controversial tool as many have said that these were machined from one piece of metal, other said both were used in the kits. Here it is a two piece in a 1943 manual. Used to take off the head bolts.

Using the special 9/16 cylinder base nut wrench to remove the 4 tall nuts holding cylinders to engine cases, 8 total. Specially bent to fit it VERY tight spaces, especially on the rear cylinder.

More of a GMTK item. Though early and late war kits came with a flat tip screwdrivers this one seems much longer. How to improperly use your screwdriver as a prybar😕while removeing the piston pin locks.

Matt,

In the RA PD illustration up thread do you know what the tool (41-T-3260) that they mention for removing the piston pin lock ring looks like? I can’t quite make it out from the illustration.

Thank you,
Henry

Henry,
I thought by the time I wrote you this I would have one of these reproductions but it seems they are hard to get even repro. I had two listed on Ebay and both sellers cancelled my orders saying they are out of stock or not for sale in the US market. ? the best I can do right now is show you a good repo picture as I have yet to see a original but this does fit in what is pictured in the manual. Avoid the JIMS tool one unless you do not care on looks. Matt

Matt,

Thank you very much for the reply and photos. So... in the RA PD illustration the tool is being held in his left hand?

Very cool thread thanks for doing it.

Thank you very much,
Henry

Here is the the inside micrometer in use measuring the cylinder bore. This is the only use of this tool I can think of, for a WLA tool kit.
