WLA 2nd echelon tools thread

Post by matt506 » Mon Jun 04, 2018 7:03 pm

Thought I would start a thread on some unique tools listed in the 2nd echelon tools section, WLA Operation and Maintenance manual ™ 10-1175 August of 1942. Started collecting these early this year. I am finding them but paying heavily and many more to go.

First tool And biggest so far in the list is this Hall-Toledo Valve face grinder. Came with plenty of accessories pictured in manual except the dial indicator, those list for $450! It came in the original Box, and has the directions dated from December of 1943, funny part is this was right in the middle of WW2 and listed on the motor data plate is Germany and Italy for foreign Patents, weird we even cared back then. Power cord was rotted and I replaced and tried to rebuild to the original end as pictured in the stone storage drawer picture.

Second tool is "Chain Tool" as listed in TM. Federal number is 41-T-3320 and HD number 12039-X. This tool is used to break apart and repair both drive and primary chain links. This is a heavy duty version of the one carried in the bike tool kit.

Today's tool. Front wheel spoke nipple wrench. Federal number 41-w-3339, Harley number 12032-x. Federal number is both cast and stamped into tool.
Book lists two types of nipple wrenches one for each tire yet I do not see a difference in nipple between rims.

Matt, I'm watching and drooling. What an awesome project. Few would have attempted this because of the prices and scarcity...YOU are de man. Moving to TN has all but halted my work. I look forward to getting on the crated engine in time and watching you collection develop. GL

Thanks Oz, it is draining my funds fast time to sell more. Was wondering what happened to yah. TN is awesome I travel to Ft Knox twice a year for a week or so. Maybe we can meet some time?😀

:) uhThis should have been listed first but not in the tool list. Military mechanics tilting work bench. Not really built exactly to military drawing, it came out of a old Indian shop. At one time it had the front chopped off to fit in a garage. Next to it is the start of a bench built exactly to the army drawings. More on this as it is built.

Spark plug wrench, Federal number 41-w-3334, Harley number 11929-40. More or less a early and late tool kit socket with a flat piece of metal stock welded on top. No markings at all.

Piston pin bushing hone (with fine abrasives). Federal number 41-h-2382, Harley number 11844-x. Used to hone out undersized bushings in the connecting rods. Made by Hall who made the valve seat grinder. Odd little tool considering nothing is listed to drive it like a lathe or drill. May have to add a drill to the set.

Though not a listed tool individually here is the concentric guage that was missing from the valve seat grinder. The small part pictured lower right in graphic pic.

Matt, that's excellent. I'm a few months behind you, awaiting a reasonable offer on my house. They just poured a pad for a storage barn for me and soon I'll get to TN and build my motor pool.

Again, good on you for tackling this worthwhile collection. I'll bet there are not mare than 5 sets like it in the world, the rest of the parts scattered around. I love this thread.
