The 32nds of May

Post by mrbill » Thu May 31, 2018 6:10 pm

Made a small haul of goodies this morning. Picked up a Barcalo 10" adjustable, a Walden-Worcester 1152 41-H-1500 breaker bar, and an assortment of sockets. Weirdly, 6 of the 15 were 32nds.

I like that adjustable!! I technically have the ones I need for my tool kits but com'on gotta admit that's a sexy one there. As for the sockets, finding a gaggle of 32nds is good. Most you find aren't, so when trying to put that kit together a good stock of the missing ones will be nice.

Nice breaker bar! I have the same model in my GMTK with the inverted "V" 1940's date mark. The hole takes the 1/2" diameter 41-B-155 bar which is unusual but correct for the GMTK.

The 5021 would be the find there. 5019 and 5025 you can find, presumably due to military procurement, but 5021 and 5023 just don't turn up.

Gordon,
Do you mean the 54** series Plomb 1/2” drive sockets?

Aha, I see the 5023 isn't listed - my fault.

The point I was making is that the odd numbered 1/32" sizes were / are very rare in Plomb, with the 19/32" and 25/32" presumably only more common because of Uncle Sam's liking for those sizes. I'm sticking to my point that the 5021 will be really rare, though. :D

Have you got a 5021 Don? How common are they round your way as I've never seen one here, and can't recall ever seeing one for sale on that auction site?

Gordon,
The 50** series are 3/8” drive deep sockets. The only ones I see in Catalog 19A are 5014 through 5020. I only have 5018, 5022 and 5024 sockets in 3/8” deep which are 9/16”, 11/16” and 3/4”. Are you sure that they made 3/8” deep sockets in 32nd” sizes? I realize that they made a lot of tools that don’t appear in any catalogs. Tin Medic’s GMTK correct ell handle is a good example. I think that I have all of the 32nd” short sockets in 1/2” drive.

Just blame it on old age Don, I meant the 5421 1/2" drive. of course. I'll go back to sleep now.

So, seen many 5421 then?

It doesn't have anything to do with the federal government. The 19/ and 25/32nds were common in DOE, DBE, and socket wrenches because you couldn't turn U.S. Standard (U.S.S.) 5/16" and 7/16" nuts and bolts without them. All U.S.S. bolts had heads that were wider in diameter Across-the-Flats than the same bolt in S.A.E. standard. The 5/16" and 7/16" S.A.E. bolts would take a 1/2" and 5/8" opening respectively. If you look at a Machinery's Handbook or any vintage catalog with wrench to bolt tables, it pops right out at you right down the line.

As for the 21/32" opening, it was used on Ford Connecting Rod Bearing Cap Nuts and Ford V8-60 Main Bearing Screws.
The 23/32" was for Chevy Main Bearing Screws.

I identified the U.S.S./S.A.E. difference as the reason for the 19/ and 25/32nds in wrenches and sockets sets a long time ago, but without a rationale for the others, I did a deep dive on catalogs last year, and found those annotations footnoted in the 1941 Herbrand.

THANK YOU WINGNUTT. That has been puzzling me for some time, I don't remember you mentioning that before on here.

I'll just have to watch for one then. I know I have 19/32" and 25/32" in my Plomb box, and since the 23/32" doesn't exist, a 21/32" will keep me happy.

I should probably double-check I don't already have one first. :D

Gordon,
I’ve been working on this 1/2” drive set which came with all of the Plomb 32nd sockets except the 29/32” which I’ve recently added. I’ve been picking up deep and 8 point sockets to add to it as extras. I’m still looking for the Pin Handle (Crossbar) which seems to be extremely rare.
