That set us shaping up well, Don. Looks like that flex bar is a tight fit. Where in the world did you find a cross bar!?

Jason,
I wish I could remember where I got that but it looks pretty used. Thanks again for all your significant contributions to this set. I feel like we should share custody. :D

Considering how few wartime S-K pieces are found, I was surprised to find this empty 3/8" drive box on Friday at an estate sale. After cleaning, the traces of the S-K diamond decal were evident. I'll have to check catalogs and see if I can determine which set came in this box.
-Don
Edit... Thanks to Bill I found a listing for a set that probably came in the box.

I've been trying to put together a complete S-K 4517 socket set. (Special thanks to d42jeep for many of the pieces.) I'm missing a 9/16” 12 point socket (there is a 6 point stand-in), 11" un-marked extension (marked diamond placeholder), and tommy bar. (If I can find a 45110 5/16" socket I'd have a 41-W-2616 set, too.)

From the 1943 S-K catalog. It shows 10 sockets but only lists 7 in the BOM. Any ideas what the others might be?

Bill,
The set is really coming along. I like that you found a box with the set number stenciled on the edge as well as the original decal in excellent condition. I imagine the reason for the discrepancy in the number of sockets listed vs the image is that the 8 point sockets were excluded during the war that likely came with the prewar set. They probably used the picture from the prewar catalog. Another interesting thing is that after the war was over they never seemed to resume production of the 3/8” drive 8 point sockets. I think all of the found examples must be prewar.

Not probably, Don. Definitely. You nailed it. The reason is because they were redundant to the 8-point sockets with 1/4", 5/16", and 3/8" service openings in SK's 1/4-inch drive sets. According to the WPB, that was a waste of steel, and, let's face it, even though we like as many options as possible today, they were right. Note that this limitation was not peculiar to SK, or to 3/8-inch drive, or to 8-point sockets. Plomb didn't make 3/8-inch drive 8-point sockets, but it had to discontinue production of its 3/8-inch 6-point sockets, which were all redundant with either its 3/8-inch drive 12-point sockets, its 1/4-inch 6-point sockets, and in some cases both. If you look at the 3/4-inch drive sections of wartime catalogs, you will see L-216 in effect there as well. The 3/4-inch drive sockets on the smaller end of the range with service openings redundant to the 1/2-inch drive sockets in the upper end of the range with the same service openings were discontinued. Anything that needed to be turned only needed one socket in one drive size to turn it, not two or three sockets with the same size service opening in another drive size or with more points.

Bill,
I found a wartime S-K 3/8" socket that might be a start to filling the smaller set. I'll send it to you in the next shipment.

I'll add a third (to mrbill's first and Don's second) Plomb 3/8 Drive set to the thread.

I found about half this collection at one time at a flea market a couple years ago and I've been slowly adding to it a little bit at a time from flea markets since then. It was in need of a 5295 box and I bought that lickety split from Andy (P3-F/E) right here on the G - which I refinished to look original and aged, and I acquired the speeder, hinge handle and one of the swivels in a recent trade with tin medic.

This collection is a superset, per se, with mainly WF- series, but there are a few 52xx placeholders (and the 18" extension, which they didn't make for the Air Corps), and the Plomb PWA spark plug socket you guys have seen before.

I just picked up a SnapOn F-70 ratchet, with a G date code, as posted here: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=303941&p=1778196#p1778196 in post 5.

I haven't yet made pics, but I also recently bought a SnapOn Ferret speeder. In a year, I'm up to 3 pieces - guess it'll be 2024 before I close out the set :)

Steve,
Well, it's not much, but I have two (2) 3/4" sockets for you to choose from - one is a rarer "2" (1942) code, the other a "G" code. Lemme know.

I ran across these 3/8" drive Armstrong F-140 universal joints in the original box at the flea last weekend.
All marked 'HI-TENSILE'.
