Hey, that FSN marked bleeder wrench looks familiar. Nice find!

Don, thanks for the feedback on the FSN marked bleeder....which is another item to add to my FSN marked spreadsheet, which needs updated (as well as the thread). I'll keep the FSN marked one, and the WOA one will go to a buddy who has an MB.

I found this box for sale the same weekend I found the 41-W-450 wrench. For $50 and this condition, I did not bring the box home with me:

I thought I had a nice score from eBay for my Armorer's tool kit, given the condition of this:

Turns out it's the post-war Sargeant brand, not the wartime. I don't fish enough to throw it in my tacklebox!

PLVMB 3031

Post by gpw_42 » Sat Sep 01, 2018 2:06 pm

Found a BC code PLVMB 3031 today....from the “wilds” of Tennessee. Pic to follow Monday. Came from a place where I’d have never anticipated turning up a WW2 wrench....

Phil, I think am far enough from your home stomping grounds to not be trespassing.

Steve

[edit: added the pic (hey, I didn't say WHICH Monday!), and deleted reference to the Veteran's Set, since the 3031 wasn't part of those]

Picked up this (X) 1027C and Craftsman No. 3 tappet wrench over the weekend. The Nicholson USA 8" mill bastard file seems too new to be from WW2.

Nice find on the Duro DC wrench. I learned some time back from Jason that the dual marked Nicholson/Black Diamond are postwar. Black Diamond alone are probably good and early Nicholson is good, just not together. Can’t have too many files, though. :D

Don, thanks for the feedback. I didn’t see the BD mark until I pulled the file out of the vinegar I was cleaning it in. On the positive side, based on the color of the metal, I didn’t think it was WW2, so it’s good to know that my instincts are beginning to be reliable. Still not there yet, and as you say, never too many files, lol!

Be careful what you wish for :) I could genuinely use the education! I might know enough now to have a skeleton to hang the info on.

Are you headed to the Willys get together in Asheville, NC on Oct. 6? http://www.southeastwillysjeepgettogether.com/ Not taking the GPW, but considering going up there.

So, yesterday I was about to burst with cabin fever, after Hurricane Florence...and thankful that I'm in a position to have cabin fever!

I hit a local pawn shop, and spent a couple hours sorting through way too many wrenches to guess how many there were. I found this (X) 1723 which I think is right for WW2, and a stack of others which are definitely NOT, so won't post them here.

Steve, that's a great find. Personally I really like the look and feel of a set of circle DC wrenches. They are a relatively cheap set to put together.

It was a good day for me on Friday, at a mix of estate sale and my favorite local pawn shop:

The jack has a 4"x6" base and an oblong cup. Not sure which adjective applies for the switch. I'll post pics into one of the jack threads in the coming days.

The tools are sort of all over the place: Williams 721 (oh, how I wanted it to be a 723!), Utica 818 hog ring pliers and a "spoon" I'm not sure of the application; Craftsman =V= DOE (5/8" x 25/32").

The Simonsen box is Vietnam-era, given the FSN and contract format. That's OK, the price and condition made it worthwhile.

This story begins on Veteran's Day, when I found this wrench the corral of a wiley vendor at the local flea. He's a pretty decent guy, and a wheeler-dealer, who's burning a little over the recent purchase of an M38A1 from some online source. I snapped some pics and sent them to Don, but didn't ask a price for the wrench, thinking I'd be back the next weekend. Don confirmed that the wrench is the right shape, via email, so I'm happy. Besides, the wrench doesn't open and close like it should, so there's NO WAY anybody else will buy it, right?

I missed a couple weeks "hunting" at the flea, and when I got back to the vendor's space after Thanksgiving, there's no wrench to be found. CRAP! Oh well, rookie mistake, right? I didn't say anything to the vendor, as I gaffed off his effort to sell me a National Ordnance M1903A3 (repro, made from cast receiver) for $900. I was in there yesterday, after being sick and parked on the couch from Thursday through Saturday, and BOOM there's the wrench. I asked a price, and he says "I'm going to make you a Christmas deal...." so I just paid the man his asking price, and have attacked the wrench with Kroil and pipe cleaner. It doesn't yet move like it should, but I think I'm making headway.

I've got some other tools (mostly non-WW2, but...) I've gathered up since I last posted, including a FairmounT 731, but I'm having camera issues. Need to get that fixed (new camera from Santa?) and catch up on the other little stuff, before the end of the year.

Merry Christmas!
